I pray for the victims, and wonder....why?
To answer your question as to "why", because there are evil men in this world.
It's actually kind of simple.

No, what I say is crazy is inevitable. And the arguments here about more restrictions is absolutely as insane as this kid was.
During the Roman Empire people would march a thousand miles through the burning sand to hit each other over the heads with clubs.
Everyone that knows these kinds of killers says the same thing, quiet, loner type, kept to himself. The fact is in a lot of ways the system let this kid down. The outrage of these types of people stems from years of oppression at the hands of bullies and "pretty people".
His spiral happened long before friday morning.
Disarming the innocent leaves the innocent to fight the armed empty handed. You live in a country without guns, good for you. But know what? Criminals still have them.
Meantime leave my guns alone.
I'm not interested in your guns or your right to own them, I have no problem with that. Guns are fun, I've shot a couple of times.
You (the royal you rather than you personally) view every fresh massacre as a threat to gun rights, rather than an opportunity to review gun laws and restrictions, so as to curb this American popular past-time of civilian massacre. And that's the distinction that needs to be recognised here; what in the rest of the developed world is considered an anomaly, has become a typicality in America. Is it not time to ask why? Why is heavily armed Switzerland so successful in preventing gun-crime, yet America isn't? It's not just purely a matter of gun law and gun restrictions of course, it's also a social and historical issue, but everything needs to be reviewed. Politicians are so scared of the vitriol and fervour that comes from pro-gun supporters that they dare not speak out; lest the vocal percentage of the population make pariahs out of them.
P.s: I'm not sure I understand your analogy of the Roman empire. What you describe is war; are you saying that America is a war-zone?
Whoa this thread spiraled out of control. First and foremost it was a terrible event that took place. This should never happen anywhere in the world regardless of what country it is in. Is gun control the answear ? No. If someone is that cold and calculated there going to get a gun in there hands somehow. Why did he do this ? Who knows ? Only him. When something sensesless happens there is a reason why we don't understand. It's because it is senseless.
One other thing I want to touch on is the fact that a child was there at midnight. That is not right. You don't do that. Your a parent and you have to think responsibly. It has nothing to do with the shoot though. If I saw someone with kids that young there I would think that was a selfish ignorant parenting. Take them during the day. Put your kids in bed at night. Set a good example for your childern. Like I said this has zero to do with the shooting. It is just common sense.
The reason most gun loving Americans react as we do is because we have seen the overreaction before. Gun laws don't stop crazy people from being crazy. Everything he did in preparation and including the act of killing are illegal. Did not slow him down. As kids, we all had to sit in class with our head on our desk in silence because one child was an ass. It wasn't fair then it is not fair now. I wish the gun laws on the books were thorughly enforced and the use of a gun in a crime carried a mandatory (NON-NEGOTIABLE) sentence.

Knee jerk reaction. Deliberately ignores the fact that until this guy pulled the trigger, he was as innocent as you. you want to protect his right to equip himself for a massacre? fine. NOBODY needs 6000 rounds of ammo and an assault rifle.

It's the age old question of where someones rights end and where somone elses begin.
Does anyone need that much ammo? No.
Who then dictates an acceptable amount?
I only have two hands, yet I have many firearms. And still over 82,000,000 legal gunowners killed nobody yesterday.
Chances are we'll never totally agree on all of it. Right now, full focus on prayers and support of the victims and families is what the focus should be. That we can all hopefully agree on

*rolls eyes* still waiting for the blame to fall on violent movies/video games...
It's only a matter of time. The only video game mentioned so far is Guitar Hero (that I've read anyway) - maybe trying to master "Walk This Way" pushed him over the edge.
It's so sad, the poor families. I even feel for the shooter's family, I'm sure they didn't set out to raise a monster.
If anyone can demonstrate a historical event a deranged individual can kill a dozen people and injure dozens more in a crowd without a firearm, I will happily accept that the universal availability of firearms was not a factor in this tragedy.
But, for those of you who don't like the usage of a suicide bomber... here you go.
