Love the fact that you have the needle in his arm before you know anything. For all we know he's mentally retarded and won't even be able to stand trial.

But by all means, let's get that needle in his arm quickly to satisfy the blood lust of our civilized society

Because gunning down 71 people in a crowded movie theater is quite a kind and endearing scenario??? :dunno I think it's pretty evident he's NOT mentally retarded...but even then, I wouldn't balk at execution for someone who gunned down 71 people. Just MY opinion...I'm not looking to influence anybody else's.

mentally retarded grad school student in medical school?

He was a PhD student in neuroscience...so I don't think it's possible for him to be mentally retarded.

It was just an example...

Would a better example be that he was mentally unstable? You can be mentally unstable and still have a high IQ

Seriously? You would still execute someone who is mentally retarded? That's just sick.
Would you demand that a 5 year old kid be put to death if he did this? It's the same thing

Far better example than mentally retarded, because it is actual possible.

LMFAO That's a ridiculous question. But, sure, show me a 5 year old that collects weapons, legally mind you, for months in preparation of gunning down multiple people and I'll put a needle in their arm, too.

neither can someone with the mental capacity of a 5 year old...

Then they likely wouldn't have carried out this guy's actions. We're dealing w/ facts, not fiction, here. "Mentally unstable" is not a get out of jail free card as far as I'm concerned. Lucky for many a murdering POS, I don't make the laws.

You are right, we will all be better served if he is put to death by lethal injection. Hell, why make it painless? We can just hang him in the town square or stone him like good Christians do. Better yet, if we draw and quarter him behind a few horses the sheer gore factor will keep others from doing it. Maybe we can make the whole thing pay-per-view so the tax payers can be paid back.

Coddled? Seriously? You think due process and humane treatment equals coddling?

Exactly. And do folks understand what happens to young white boys in prison? I think a prison sentence in the general population might just be worse than death row.

Interesting that you resent his actions but offer nothing to address the problem. This event is not the problem, it's a symptom of the bigger issue.

If and when he is ever sentenced he will get life in prison. Which means all his healthcare needs are met at taxpayer expense as well as all other needs. He will go through appeals for the rest of his life no matter the sentence. I full expect he will never get the death penalty. Unlike the people whose lives were effected, by this sick individual, who have to deal with his decisions.

So kill him then? Is that what you want?

Interestingly, this was a highly intelligent law abiding man, and was not considered to be a threat.....right up to the time that he pulled his legally purchased firearms and started killing people.

In the wake of the Oklahoma City bombing, checks were put in place to identify bulk purchases of the fertilizer used in the manufacture of the bomb. There are no checks in place to identify people who purchase large amounts of ammunition or assault rifles.

The American legal system has consistently failed to protect its citizens from this kind of attack. The first that I can recall personally was Brenda Spencer in 1979.....that's eight years before this gunman was born. The message goes out with monotonous regularity that American society would rather tolerate random slayings than admit that the obsolete wisdom of mass ownership of firearms needs to be more closely examined.

I still can't believe this happened. It is terrifying. It is a shame that there are people in the world who just want to hurt others. My husband went with a friend to see Batman tonight and I will be a nervous wreck until he gets home. I have a fear of some other sicko "copying" that freaks idea.

Dropped my boy and his friends off at the theatre this afternoon to see it. Very glad to live in a place where gun crime is taken seriously enough to warrant preventive measures.

I would like to see the system work in such a way as he pays the ultimate price for this crime. No one in that theater deserved to die by his hand. Give him a fair trial and allow justice to be served. I doubt if and when it ever makes it to trial he will get the death penalty. He deserves the death penalty if he is guilty of these murders.

The death penalty has consistently proved ineffective in preventing murder. If revenge is all you're wanting, by all means advocate for it, but if having a safe place for your grandchildren to grow up in means more to you, you'd be better off channeling your anger into a more constructive solution.

This nutjob would have used something else if guns were not available. My question is really why do so many people have so much self loathing they wish to destroy themselves and kill others they do not even know?

I don't think I'll ever understand the idea of "oh, yeah, he legally went out and bought an inordinate amount of weapons and ammunition with the intent to kill innocent people and faced little to no restrictions; but he wanted to kill all those people so he would have found a way to do it regardless of firearm restrictions."

What are we saying here, that these deaths are unavoidable? Inevitable?

No, what I say is crazy is inevitable. And the arguments here about more restrictions is absolutely as insane as this kid was.

During the Roman Empire people would march a thousand miles through the burning sand to hit each other over the heads with clubs.

Everyone that knows these kinds of killers says the same thing, quiet, loner type, kept to himself. The fact is in a lot of ways the system let this kid down. The outrage of these types of people stems from years of oppression at the hands of bullies and "pretty people".

His spiral happened long before friday morning.

Disarming the innocent leaves the innocent to fight the armed empty handed. You live in a country without guns, good for you. But know what? Criminals still have them.

Meantime leave my guns alone.
