I'm very fortunate that the only debt I have is a couple hundred to be paid off on payday from my credit card and a £150 overdraft I don't intend to keep much longer.

I have CC debt with interest and then a student loan that's interest free that I've paid down to about 10k. By years end, I can see myself being debt free aside from that student loan. It's supposed to be a five year loan, but I keep deferring.

Back when people used libraries, some people would dig up some Standard and Poors publications, looking up multi million dollar companies with thousands of employees, find out who the CEO was of some of those companies, and use their name as a contact reference that you applied to that company for a job. The way I understood the reasoning is that if someone wanted to check to see if you actually applied at the company, good luck getting any info back from the CEO of a multi million dollar company.

PRESTO - your student loan is deferred indefinitely.

I heard it work, but can't speak from first hand experience.

And yeah, it is mind boggling. I am 23, my mom at this age was planning her wedding... heck, most of my classmates are married, some with a kid or two... shit, one has a 8-9 year old daughter, for god's sake!
As for student loans - thank god I never had to resort to that. Worked my ass off and always had a grant from the Uni, and one kind of scholarship or another. My current one is a little different. After graduating they need to find me a job - if they can do that in 6 months I am bound to work there for 2 years (but the money I make is mine) or if they can't get me a job in those 6 months I am free of the contract and don't have to pay back their scholarship. So either way I don't have to pay back anything.

It blows my mind that kids are coming to my class not knowing what happened on 9/11. Oh, and last year I had a kid ask me what the pocket was for on the front of my boombox. I don't think the kid had seen a cassette tape or player up close before. Hah!

Luckily I got through college without any student loans. Between scholarship money and working full time throughout college to pay for the extras, I don't have to worry about it now.
