Uhm... isn't Scotland part of Great Britain? So wouldn't it be appropriate for him to refer to himself as British (citizenry) as well as Scottish (ancestry/heritage)?

funny thing is Tennis ( apart from the davis cup) is NOT a nationalistic sport imho, players play for themselves in the main, not for their country, yet the fans do tend to wrap the flag around their heroes

The scots get a bit defensive about their sportsmen and women. They think we steal them for ourselves. Often it's simply a matter of whether in the sport in question, at the international level, do you mainly play for Britain or England/Scotland/Wales/Ireland?
eg: Kenny Dalglish will always be referred to as a Scottish footballer, while Steve Redgrave will always be referred to as a British rower.
