So a high school friend created an event for a ballooon release at our former high school for a passed teacher who was forced into retirement and widely respected by many and some twit was invited under the Facebook pseudonym, Planeteer Kwame. This is what he wrote and it pissed me off.

Sorry to hear about your teacher :( Great educators are so important these days. Maybe he would love a tree planted at the school, where the kids can hang out. He'd probably want a healthy earth for all his caring students & wouldn't want any creatures hurt while people are honoring him. This website has many great alternatives!

You don't write this shit in an event honoring a respected man. Screw anyone pushing an agenda no matter if they think it's best or not... FYI Captain Planet and the Planeteers is a cheesy fictitious cartoon thought up by DIC later taken over by Hanna Barbera. Don't hide behind a silly pseudonym to push your ideals.

(Those on my FB yes I copied and pasted what I shared on my profile...)

Admittedly I was questioning the balloon thing myself but I'm not going to say anything openly because it's not that problematic.

No offense, Dana, but w/ some of the stuff that comes out of your mouth you'd expect you to be a lot more thick-skinned.

I don't believe I have ever made light of a death... Aside from someone who actually deserved it like a killer...

I didn't see anybody make light of it. :dunno
I'm sorry I was referring to the quote by the person pushing their agenda on the event and people thinking this should be found amusing. It shouldn't. You don't post your personal views on what is environmentally friendly on a page dedicated to a man that died. It's not the time or place. If I'm being rude for my beliefs on this subject so be it. I also don't find anything funny or joking about what was said. That's what I was trying to convey but it seems I know where everybody stands that spoke to me directly in this thread... I've said my piece.

If you want my 0.02-

I think whomever it was had some good suggestions. *shrug* what makes you so sure it wasnt posted with good intention? you yourself said that the person had to be personally invited to join the conversation maybe it was a former student. I find it ironic that you are getting so upset about this when you yourself said you thought the idea was stupid to begin with.

Anyone attending the event can invite anyone they want. Unless the creator was keeping up with everyone everyone invited there is no way to know if every person was an alumni or teacher. Someone with a thing for the environment could of very well invited the individual knowing very well what would happen. It's like me posting anything religion oriented/anti-religion orient on my facebook, I know what will eventually happen yet I do it anyway. It's no way near ironic. I never said it was stupid. I said I originally was not fond of the idea. Because I know the hazards of releasing balloons into the atmosphere but it's honoring a man I respected so I said "fuck it"; not to mention after the creator read the post I was informed that everything was biodegradable. She did her homework.

so fricken what, somebody suggested planting a tree. OMG. END THE WORLD.

so what if they were already releasing balloons? maybe this person was suggesting a way to have something that will (most likely) always be there to remember said person. i know that it's a totally common thing around this area to plant/dedicate trees (which is also a good, environmentally friendly thing, fyi) for deceased school teachers or officials.
