Am I off base? If the police don't believe he's telling the truth, isn't that obstruction of justice? I mean wtf gives?

PORTLAND, Maine - It's been more than five months since Ayla Reynolds was reported missing from her father's home in Waterville.

Friday is National Missing Child day and Ayla's mother, Trista, spoke with News 8 about her daughter.

"A mom knows and like deep down, I don't believe that I will ever see Ayla again," said Reynolds.

She told News 8's Meghan Torjussen that the glimmer of hope she had for her daughter's safe return is dimming. "It's hard to keep your faith going when you have nothing to go on, nothing to go on," she said.

Ayla's father, Justin DiPietro, reporter her missing from his Violette Avenue home in Waterville on Dec. 17. State police have said his story about Ayla being kidnapped from the house doesn't pass the straight-face test. Trista agrees.

"Deep down I know he has the answers I'm looking for and he's too cowardly to tell me," Reynolds said. Trista said she hasn't heard about any developments or leads from investigators recently. "Whoever has her or knows something, just tell us so she can come (home), let her be at peace, please. I want Ayla to know that I love her very much," said Reynolds.

The authorities aren't allowed to hold a person without due process.

Until they have more evidence outside of "he doesn't pass a straight face test" they can't just hold him for the fuck of it.

and it's not obstruction of justice if he's not obstructing their investigation.

Darrell's right. Not to mention, you don't want to be the Chief of a Department getting ass-raped in the media for arresting a poor father w/ a missing kid just b/c you don't think his story adds up.

Either way, there's not enough info in that story to judge whether or not he's done anything wrong. :dunno

There was blood of the little girl found in his basement... This has been going on for 5 months... Maybe I used to watch too many crime dramas :24:

I don't think it's illegal to have people's blood in your house, and obviously it wasn't that much blood or else they would have used that as a basis for detaining him, probably without bail.

That's not in the story posted. :dunno But even then, unless I read the posted story wrong, she was taken from his house, right??? Truth be told, chances of a child abduction occurring inside the child's residence are slim as it's usually a crime of opportunity, but there's still no concrete evidence (again, from the story posted which only states that his story doesn't pass the "straight-face test") the guy in question has done anything. If he DID, then they need to get all their evidence collected and have all their Ts crossed and Is dotted before they go after him.

Maybe, LOL

Maybe, LOL

They said the chances she was abducted are slim to none, there was no break in the police could find. Sorry that was not in this story...

Unfortunately you can't make a case on "chances are slim to none that this happened." It's better to move slowly and deliberately and have the goods to nail someone in court than to rush to court out of some misguided sense of swift justice and get an acquittal b/c the burden of proof hasn't been met.

Look at the Casey Anthony case. Even though they took their time on that case, it still wasn't enough to meet the burden of proof.

feeling that someone is lying and having proof someone is lying are 2 different things...

I am curious whether he had primary custody...or was one of those guys getting every other weekend..and being raped with garnishments in child support.
Not saying that makes it ok...but what would be the guys motive?

Child protective services was involved with the family before the little girl disappeared.

There is probably a whole bunch of stuff we don't know about the biological father and mother of the girl in this case, and added the fact that there was a girlfriend living with the father at the time of the little girls disappearance, it was most likely a messed up situation to begin with.

If I was a betting man, my money is on the girlfriend.

Give it time, someone is most likely going to crack.

I'm also guess that the state social services department is doing a lot of CYA.

Look up the Zahra Baker case which recently concluded here in NC. You can't tell me that Zahra's father didn't have any clue what his daughters step mother did. You also can't tell me that the county's department of social services didn't have a good reason to intervene on the little girls behalf. You also can't tell me that family members and neighbors of the family actually had some balls to try to help that little girl.

I believe what Zahra has in common with Ayla is that their own communities have let them down, and now that Ayla can be assumed to be dead, is the fact that people don't want to look at themselves and ask what they could of done to prevent it.

Then again, look what happens to some people AFTER they're locked up...
