Saw this on pinterest, but there are tons of ads running in the US at least that are meant to scare people away from smoking.

Fuck can I go NOWHERE without seeing some depressing image the ill effects of smoking?
I can't take these videos of people with holes in their neck anymore :(

I have never smoked, I never will and I think it's a dumb habit.
Maybe it hits me harder because I'll inevitably lose my mother to smoking, with her 35 year 2 pack a day habit, but I just don't feel I need to see this.

Does it stop people from smoking? I doubt it.

In a hypocritical move, I am in favor of the anti-distracted driving ads...but if those played half as much as these I might feel the same.

Thoughts?

Here is something even better
the Joe Cool was a new gimmick they came out with many years ago to entice men to buy the cigarettes
The shape of his head in most images resembles the male anatomy on purpose via Camel Industries or what ever they are
I watched a film on advertisements and labels why they were what they were back in the day

and to your subject no add will make me even think for a second about quitting except an add that says QUIT SMOKING ITS BAD FOR YOU
all the imagery that is on that add just makes me think about sleeping

Over here they had adverts on boards showing the inner body (lungs), what healthy ones looked like and what ones abused by smoking looked like. I'm not sure if it got the message through, truly I think smoking is one of those things....if people want to do it, they will. I've nothing against smokers personally, I enjoy the occasional cigar even, but I wouldn't ever take it up fully.

idk. they never stopped me when i was smoking years ago. pretty sure its one of those things that you stop when YOU are good and ready..

but my guess is some of those shock ads work good at detouring the younger crowed from possibly starting. obviously not all but i bet some which still works in the anti smoking favor.

I'd almost prefer more clinical shots of lungs and stuff, we have people with holes in their throats giving tips on how to handle your life once smoking debilitates you...just...bah it's depressing.

Could be, hopefully it does stop someone
I just cringe when they come on

i assume its less of the shock part of the ad and more of the associations you have with it? either way im sorry about your mother. its always a tough thing. after all these years i still cover my eyes when a firearm suicide is shown in a show or movie. i guess its something ill always shudder at

I'd like to see that add

I'd like to know if they've done any studies about whether that sort of thing really works. I know several people who smoke, including my boyfriend, and I know the anti-smoking pictures on the packs don't seem to even register with them. It certainly doesn't appear to put anyone off.

I prefer the more proactive approach, like over here they're saying shops will no longer be able to display cigarettes behind the counter like they currently do - they'll have to keep them under the desk, out of sight. I think that's more likely to discourage kids than disgusting images.

Out of sight out of mind? Perhaps.

What's happening is Supermarkets and other big shops have to have them behind a shutter thing, you have to ask for them. But to be honest because it's been so publicized, people will still buy them regardless. The smaller shops don't have that yet.

The biggest incentive to quit is price. By gradually squeezing the tobacco industry with taxes, the price of smoking ends up unattractive.

No this is true, it'd be better if everyone had to do it. I think it'd make it harder for kids having to ask for a specific brand when they can't even see what's on offer. It's never going to deter everyone, but I reckon it'd put off some teenagers, the ones that aren't that sure about it in the first place.

They were talking about having to have a licence once upon a time, like a driving licence card but to show you were old enough to buy cigarettes. You'd have to send off for it. But there's a lot of holes in that - if people were vigilant about age limits in the first place then it'd be harder for teens to get hold of them, and that's obviously not always the case, especially with small shops as opposed to large businesses.

I do think the key is in stopping teens getting into it in the first place, rather than trying to target adults smokers who've been doing it for years.

Reminds me, I just read an article saying large cigars and loose tobacco sales are up like threefold as a result of higher taxes on other tobacco products.

I say: DUH.

My boyfriend rolls his own for this exact reason, the cost.
