With an expensive lens. :ninja I took those shots with a 70-300mm telephoto lens, a tripod and a remote shutter release. I believe I just used the automatic mode on my camera (the D40). Don't tell any of the real photographers here I didn't use manual mode. :ninja

and im just starting to learn my other settings and ive had my D40 for 3 years almost. im in A-pri mostly now but i do use my manual mode for a lot of night work or stills

This was off kilter of course, which I did on purpose as I wanted the streetlamp in the shot, streaming in light. On kilter, it didn't appeal as much to me.

WOW! I totally feel out of my element in this competition now... I love the lighting in your shots. Where were the 2nd and 3rd shots taken? The winter scene is fabulous, I always love snow shots. And *squee* to the little guy!

Thanks both. The tree was from Joshua Tree National Park. I do like odd trees - have taken a few in my time to be sure.

I hope you'll continue to join the league when it starts. The polls will be anonymous so there's no telling what can win. The leagues have all been close affairs anyway. No matter what pics you see people post in this thread - has no bearing at all on the league :) Like they say about stocks - past performance is no predictor of the future etc etc.

The second shot was taken from the Peak District in England when I visited my sister. We ate at a country pub and this scene was just nearby. The third shot was from the "Three Peaks challenge" (I was one of the drivers). The challenge is to scale the highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales in 24 hours. I suspect it was from Scafell Pike (England's highest).
