Envious people at work

How do you deal with people like this?

One of my co workers is envious as hell and i wanted to see how others dealt with folks like this before i said a few things to said person.

- I got a new PC at work - He whined about a new pc, and even went as far as disconnecting the fan on his pc to get a new one

- I got extra memory on my PC at work - He suddenly complained of his pc being slow

- I usually leave early on Friday as i cannot go over 40 hours a week... he would get visibly upset every friday around 2 since he knew i got to leave early - now he has requested every other Friday off LOL

- I got two monitors on my PC because i do a lot of work in AutoCAD and Photoshop he took another cubicles monitor and demanded with my boss that show him how to set up dual monitors.

- I often get invites to conferences and training sessions for my continuing education and training hours - he got so upset about it and complained to my boss as to why I was being allowed to go to these conferences and he wasnt. Now i have to limit the conferences i go to, or lie when i go to one.

- Every year the vendors we deal with provide Rodeo concert tickets for working with them the past year, I always get first pick, which usually meant i got to grab at least 2 tickets for the top shows! The last 4 years we have gone to the top rodeo artist, but this year he said that he had seniority over me so he wanted first pick, he got ZZTop tickets - He doesnt even like ZZTOP, but because he knew i wanted them he grabbed them

Im not a confrontational-type of person (dont listen to FW LOL) but i really want to shove my foot up this dude's ass right now LOL

Does anyone know of a better way to deal with people like this at work?

I am but a lowly customer service rep. No one is jealous of me.

But I would advise just giving him the look when he's being ridiculous and jealous. He already knows he is, so all you should have to do is just give him the look that just says you really feel sorry for him that he could be so pathetic.

As do I. I have dealt with this sort of person before ... unfortunately, he was also a lap dog for the business owner's son so there wasn't much we could do about him.

So it sounds like management already knows how obnoxious this guy is? That sucks since professionally, there isn't much one can do about it if management doesn't bite it in the ass. About the only thing one can do in this situation is try to ignore him as best as possible ....


Or invite him out for a drink and then knock him out.

I'm assuming the management has no problems with how you do your work, or the rodeo tickets, the training sessions, etc, so why should you change your patterns? Every time he goes whining to the boss about "He got this and I want it too...." might just drive another nail in his professional coffin until he won't be there to bother anybody.

If not, tell him to STFU and do his job, maybe he'll be automatically afforded the same things you are.

had the same pissing contest at my last job
I worked in the graphics dept
so everyone thought our job look like we were playing and it looked easy
and we had dual zeons with dual monitors and drawing pads
well one of the groups that just type text into manuals complained and wanted stuff like us
well they got our hand me downs and we go newer faster machines with the works
yes they started complaining again
I had one guy say that 3d modeling was easy
I had him sit at my desk and asked him to make a sphere he couldnt do it
he was pissed at me after that

Exactly!! Also think how you'd feel if you were in charge. This guy sounds like a total pain to the managment, while you are doing your share without complaint.

In the short term, the squeeky wheel may get the grease... but if we're thinking globally, we eventually gotta replace that effing wheel.

I guess you could say that i am doing what he was trying to do for years, and then some!

I mean right now the data centers and our environment is as secure as can be... Ive busted my ass for 3 years to like darkcgi mentioned make it look like im farting around lol but it has not been without its troubles LOL

I too have asked them do try and do my job, dealing with my boss, along with any random off the wall requests that come in from leadership... Hell, when I am off or not at my desk and something with the data centers, their access or their security comes up everyone starts freaking out because nobody "knows" what to do despite the fact that i have done several knowledge transfer documents with our 24x7 guys as well as my immediate peers (I am one of 4 people under my boss).

A few years ago, my mother had a co-worker who was giving her some problems. My mother asked me what would I do if I were in her situation.

I told her that it didn't matter what I would do because what I would do would likely work for me but not for her. Everyone is different. I handle confrontations better than she does.

Every time he moans about something send a random fact e-mail to his Boss about him from an anonymous address, it does't have to be malicious, you could say something like "X likes to watch the sun rise on cold winter mornings" or "X prefers margarine to butter", eventually the Boss will confront X and show him these e-mails to which X should be able to establish a pattern as to when and why these are happening. That should stop him moaning for a while. You need to think outside the box.
