It's all upbringing. How we are raised will dictate how we interact with one another.

I for one will hold a door and give up my seat for a lady. It's just how I'm drawn, and by now it's just habitual.

However, I realize that my old school beliefs may not fly in todays "cut or be cut" world. Some things you do "for a lady"
have the potential to offend.

"I apologize for offering up my seat dear madam. I saw you standing in those uncomfortable heels, and just assumed you'd
want to sit. Please excuse my misguided assumption. I was unaware that you are actually an iron worker who can press nearly 300 lbs"

It may be wrong, but with gender come certain stereotypes.

"Lady let's make a deal... I won't be angry with you because you can ride a Harley better than I, but you can't be offended if I can cook better than you"

It's a messed up world... I blame Rap Music!!

Common courtesy should not be dictated by sex.

You hold the door open for both friends and strangers. You treat those as you expect to be treated.

Now, if you're trying to hop in bed with the chick, you try to go that extra mile:D

I work primarily with men in my industry, but every once in a while I'll get a girl on the phone when I'm looking for help (most of the time technical). I do find myself thinking that if I get a girl on the phone "oh boy, does she have a clue?" where as I don't tend to think that way with men. A couple of "breaker" questions tells me if the person has an idea of what I'm talking about.

I cant see whats so hard about saying please and thankyou, opening doors for elderly or disabled or saying excuse me etc. A lot of people are just self absorbed bastards these days, male and female.

Oh please. Lets stop putting women on a pedestal. You guys wanted equality and you got it.

I've been called a "sexist" for holding a door open FFS.

Well, here is one thing we can agree on.

Women want their cake and eat it too. They pick and choose when they want a man to take care of them and went to be those "sassy independents" at a drop of a hat.

I'm going to guess that, if asked, you support equality amongst the sexes and equal fairness.

However...?

If I hold a door for a woman and she is offended that is her problem. Being raised by my mother alone I am well aware there has always been a huge gap in the pay between men and women which is wrong. If a woman wishes to be an ironworker or a plumber or a dockworker if she is as physically capable as a man have at it sister. My original post was about young people today being too much about ME.

I really should teach a course in how to be a gentleman. I had to grasp the pew in front of me and force myself to keep my seat so I would not correct the young man two rows in front of me.

A young couple walks in together ( I assume they are dating). When they get to the pew where they intend to sit the young man sits on the end of the row so the girl has to climb over him to sit down. If he intended on sitting on the outside he should allow her to get in and move over. A gentleman always allows the lady to sit first.

Was she wearing a short skirt? Maybe he wanted a peek?

Can anyone give me one reason why men should open doors first for women

Chivalry made sense when men were the main providers. Women needed you, and therefore in order to snag one you'd have to act chivalrous. The game has changed. Most women want it both ways, and it provides men little incentive to act truly chivalrous because they have less in the game now.

I will continue to hold the door for a lady. Obviously you will disagree but you and I will just have to agree to disagree.

For the same reason I, as a woman, hold doors open for men. It's the polite thing to do.

If the person gets offended, then it is their personal problem and not a reflection on every single person of the same sex.

I agree that it is the polite thing to do. I hold doors open for everyone

however, we're talking about the seeming moral obligation to hold doors open for women specifically

I personally dont expect a guy to do it, but its nice if he does (rare in oz haha ) at the same time though I like to know the man is the protector, the head of the house etc, Im old school in those views, I dont like the womens lib shitt I think we are built diff physically and emotionally for a reason and have our roles to play, thats for me though.

If you were male and he was female that would be considered chauvinistic. :24:

or sexual harrassment.

LOL, good point. I have told my niece the same thing before (minus the "son" and adding in a "marry rich"). In my defense, we asked her if she likes asparagus and she told us that she was a capricorn. *facepalm*

Guys have to do something to attract us women folk. We no longer need your money, and since artificial insemination is always an option (and I hear they are well on their way to creating semen in the lab), we have little use for your kind anymore. Opening that door may be your only ticket out of a lonely, sad life, my friend.
