Students at a new Utah high school are facing disappointment after their choice for a new school mascot was rejected for one of the strangest reasons possible: Board members deemed it might be seen as offensive to middle-aged women.

As reported by Salt Lake City Fox affiliate KTSU, Draper (Utah) Corner Canyon High announced its new mascot and school colors on Wednesday, with Canyons School District officials proclaiming that the school's teams will be called the Chargers, using a blue and white color scheme.

That's all fine and good except for the fact that the school's future student body -- which was given the opportunity to select its own future mascot -- had chosen to be the Cougars. With some 23 percent of the student vote, the Cougar choice was far preferred to other options, which included the Chargers, Diamondbacks, Falcons, Raptors, Broncos, Bears and Cavaliers.

The reason why the future student body gravitated toward Cougars is pretty clear: area collegiate power BYU uses the Cougar as its mascot and enjoys an enormous fan base of area residents and those who follow the Mormon faith (BYU is a Mormon institution).

Still, the Canyons School Board refused to accept the Cougar as a mascot out of fear that it might offend older women.

Found this on another local news site (local to the school)

With 23 percent of the votes, future students had selected the Cougar as the school's mascot, but Canyons School District said that board members expressed concern over the use of Cougar because it's used as a derogatory term for some women. They also said that the Cougar is also a mascot for three other Utah schools, plus Brigham Young University, whose school colors are also blue and white. Corner Canyon High School is the first in Utah to use the Charger as its mascot.

That makes much more sense than the term "Cougar" offending middle aged women.

What makes sense?

That 3 other schools have the same mascot?

If so big deal. There are over 220 high schools in Utah

Plus they said it had to do with offending women

No, they didn't want to use a derogatory term, not offend women...

board members expressed concern over the use of Cougar because it's used as a derogatory term for some women.

Besides, it's their school, their decision. I don't give a rats ass what they call their mascot. If the student body want to fight the decision, that's their right.

Is cougar a derogatory term then? I know some women who describe themselves as cougars, something to be proud of if you're a certain age and can still pull attractive young men.

I did not think so

Many of my cougar friends are very proud of the label

They could always go with the strategy that one of the community colleges did here in protest. Their mascot is an artichoke and their school colors were, for a long time, (IIRC) pink and turquoise. :D
