So Wikipedia will shut down for 24 hrs in protest of the new anti-piracy laws being pushed through..

Do you agree that some of these laws have hurt more than helped the industries they planned to protect?

Opponents of controversial federal anti-piracy legislation known as SOPA seem to be picking up steam. Supporters of the legislation in both houses of Congress appear to have backed off, the Obama administration has expressed concerns with the legislation, and an Internet blackout slated for Wednesday is picking up supporters.

A House subcommittee was slated to prepare the Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA, for a vote later this month; the Senate had planned a vote on the companion bill, PIPA (The Protect IP Act,) even sooner. Now, it appears both votes will be delayed.

some of what they are wanting do go to far IMO. we already have enough restriction, not sure that i would want even more

The problem is this goes hand in hand with DMCA and has been pushed by Actra..

IMO the start of all this was with Napster and from there anyone and their dog has jumped on the bandwagon..

Soon you will no longer have DVD + Blue Rays and by that I mean probably as fast as two years. The recent closure of Blockbusters has seen the most Rental Stores closed and Netflix and VOD ( Video on Demand ) with extremely low prices that will eventually kill DVD and Blue Rays so that everytime you want to watch one of these movies you need need to pay the rental fee again.. Your PVR will not be able to keep the higher and higher density of HD that these movies will push.

The same is happening to CD Roms as they fade to Online purchases and you can only transfer or use them on such and such a device. Yes today you can use them everywhere but when CD Roms will have faded completely, all they will be required to do is give 30 to 90 days notice of change of terms and they will be able to lock you to a device specific again.

We can only hope that new business ventures will pop up and bring new technology to keep and distribute these formats..

This was a discussion that was held 9 months ago on how Digital technology has finally convinced certain fields to protect their Trade Mark forever. While this may sound great in some aspects it can be a problem in others.

I agree, but your rights and resources / money have been wasted for many years now..

Funny how it took Wiki and Google ( to name but a few ) to be infringed on before something was done..

When the little people get trampled on no one says anything.. In fact they all jump in to help..

:eek...I just read that the US "justice" dept will be able to issue court orders to NON citizens over stuff accessed online?

Surely that doesnt mean what I think it does:willy_nilly:

You bet it is.. Any country that has extradition agreement with the US will be a target for this new law..

Exactly what sites are temporarily shut down?
Here is what I'm seeing:

Craigslist is closed
Google has blackened out their name, but searches still work
Wikipedia works normally, even when I click on the english link.

I just checked Wikipedia...from the english link, it sent me to the thing I searched but immediately sent me to a blacked out page asking me to contact my representatives.
