Three people are confirmed dead after a cruise ship carrying more than 4,000 people ran aground off Italy.

There were scenes of panic as the Costa Concordia hit a sandbar on Friday evening near the island of Giglio and listed about 20 degrees. People reached land by lifeboats but some swam ashore.

Rescue teams have been going from cabin to cabin, searching for survivors.

Italians, Germans, French and British were among the 3,200 passengers. There were also 1,000 crew on board.

Helicopters evacuated the last 50 people on the deck who were in a "worsening" situation.

Three people were confirmed dead, Italian coast guard officials said on Saturday morning - fewer than the six or eight deaths reported by Italian media earlier.

did i read correctly yesterday that the captain was arrested for manslaughter and other stuff!?

the whole thing is just too wrong to be true, kwim? i mean, HOW!?

I'm thinking there'll be some sort of negligence attached to the charges. With the technology available, constant depth readings are available. IMHO, there's not excuse to run a ship aground.

The ship's black box has been recovered and is being analyzed. It sounds like there is a large rock that juts out and is avoided by vessels. It sounds like the skipper brought his vessel in close, a practice often done by captains of cruise ships, as a sort of "fly by" salute. A news story I read quoted people who have seen this practice done many times but, never as close to land as this time. It looks as if it was a grave case of human error. The skipper was on shore before his ship was evacuated. According to laws governing ship abandonments, was to remain aboard until the evacuation was complete. Failure to do so may result in a 12-year prison sentence. He claimed his charts don't show the rock while ferries that ply the waters know it's there. It would seem, on the surface, that he is denying culpability in the face of damning evidence.

The Captain isn't rich enough for that. It's the firms insurance companies that will bear the brunt, which will raise their premiums, which will mean cutting their costs, which will mean innocent workers getting laid off.
