I don't think there is ANY reason to keep your child back iun Kindergarten. Teachers expect children to be fully literate and shit by the time they reach Kindergarten and no this isn't a new phenomenon. I was put in "Pre-First". Because my teacher thought I was dumb 2 weeks into my Kindergarten year. It was a total waste of time. It was Kindergarten squared. My cousin is thinking about keeping her son back... Apparently she hadn't informed of of this yet he still came and said to her "Mommy I don't want to stay back..."

I agree! There are definitely some exceptions...obviously if they have severe delays, that's one thing. If the child is just having trouble with reading or something like that, I think it's silly (and this is coming from a person who has worked with and for children for close to a decade)

Shrugs, have no idea what it's even like in my country now, let alone yours but I know GCSE results are getting better while the kids are more illiterate.Even when I was in infant school (kindergarten) over 30 years ago I could read and write fluently, the teachers didn't know what to do with me so they used me as free labour to help the other kids with their reading. Not boasting or exagerating but I would say when I was 5 years old I could read better than about 75% of 16 year old school leavers today. I think that says more about education standard today than me being some genious. Kids need the basics taught as early as possible while their brain is the most receptive.

Peter, I get what you mean....However, I also think that you are clearly an exception. There are reasons IQs exist, but to be expected to live up to standards at such a young age just really bums me out. It makes me really sad to think that children, even at age 5, can be made to feel like less than, not by their peers, but by adults. It seems to me that at that age, kids are still learning and making important connections, and they are all doing it at a different rate.

I see where you're coming from and to an extent agree. Some kids are brighter than others but the brain is most receptive to learning and picking things up quickly, the younger a child is. I dont think kids should be put under any pressure at that age but a parent teaching them in a completely relaxed setting without any pressure before they start school, the basics is a real and invaluable help.
Baha. I had to go to Kindergarten summer school back in the day. The only thing I remember from it is making instruments and walking in a circle around the classroom playing them.

Give the kid another year. They they go into kindergarden better prepared. Some kids take more time to get prepared for that big step. It is up to the parent. If I think my child would benifit from it then I would hold them back.

I would agree with you on this if we weren't speaking in terms of kindergarten. As far as I am concerned, unless there is some sort of disability the child is dealing with, I see little reason to not move them on to first grade. If they are going to have issues, chances are they will be more noticed and more aided once in the elementary setting. Kindergarten (in a lot of states) is not mandatory...so why keep them in it twice?

I agree with this. Dont send them in the first place. Too many parents here are too keen to ship their kids off to "big" school before they are ready. Then, the poor kid has to deal with being held back a year.
I've been held back, I think I'm eligible to drop my opinion on the subject. I think it's pointless. I know it was pointless in my case. Where I',m at in my life has no barring on this topic. What I do for work has no barring on this conversation. Don't try to bring this conversation to a place it DOESN'T need to go because you feel like trying to troll me into an argument.

There are many reasons why a parent may hold a child back. One big one is their social skills. Kindergarten is that prep grade. They learn the importance of having to listen to someone other than their parents and their family. They learn there are many other kids that need attention too and they must be patient. They start learning to read more than they probably did at home with parents. Sometimes behavior issues develop while in kindergarten that may not have existed before so it's best to keep them back to make sure those issues are dealt with without having to shove that child into another grade, which they may not get that attention and help to learn how to control the problems.
No one in my family has been held back, but I'm all for it if that child is simply not ready to move on. I did, however, wait an extra year before sending Michael to kindergarten because I noticed somethings that probably would have caused problems in school and I didn't want him to start off that way. Aiden, on the other hand, started off great and it wasn't til the school year was half over before the school, doctors, and I realized he has ADD/ADHD among a couple other things such as issues with social interactions. As a parent I can say the things he did in school were not things that were being done at home. If Aiden would have needed to be held back I would have done it, but if there's one thing he excels in, it's definitely his academics and he's grown so much behavior wise.
But to go around and say it's pointless or stupid is beyond me. Unless if you've actually had to make the decision then I don't understand how someone could even have an opinion on it without knowing everything first.
More power to the parents that do care and do what needs to be done to help their child exceed, even if it does mean to take the building blocks grade again.

I doubt I would go along with teachers desire to hold back any of my kids from kindergarten, unless they were a complete little shit and not aquiring any of the basic lessons.
I could see how some kids need to though, there are some kids in Amara's pre-K class who can't even spell/identify theiir name yet and they've been going since August. Some still aren't forming sentences yet... but the lack of skillls is more the parents fault. They aren't working with their kids at home.
You can't leave everything to the teachers, that's not their job. They lay down the stepping stones, parents need to help the kids find their balance to step forward.
