I have always assumed this, at least as a hunch. I am not qualified to know lol As Dana says, it's vastly ineffective, but nothing in the world is perfect, and evolution often seems ineffective for long periods of time.

No but seriously, it's an interesting theory. I'd guess as well that the reason it's ineffective is, like Wyndex suggested, because humans are notorious for espousing their actual nature to fit in with societal expectations.

Maybe it depends on the area. They should do a study and see if you get higher rates of gay people in highly populated areas. The world population during the time of the Greeks might have been low overall, but high enough in populated areas to spark off the same-sex loving.....

Interesting theory but it attributes purposefulness to evolution. Evolution has no interest in preventing overpopulation or anything else. Evolution is just a mechanism where genes that help a species survive are passed down.

Male gorillas practice homosexuality when they are living in all male groups. Perhaps this tides them over until they are strong enough to become the leader of a group with females. Without homosexuality they may become so horny they would attack a leader before they were ready and be severely injured. Maybe my theory is BS. I'm just thinking out loud.

Humans are more complex than gorillas emotionally. So maybe the bi-sexual trait in gorillas takes on the whole spectrum in a human population as a spandrel effect.
