My degree will cost about £9,800 altogether. Not including accomodation. But I've loved every second of it, so I can't complain.

I thought the government paid your tuition. Isn't that how it's done in Europe!?!?!

There is a lot of pressure on kids to decide what they want to do immediately out of school. Although volunteering is a wonderful idea, I think it would be better done while the child was in high school than when they get out. States like Tennessee offer scholarships to every student with a certain grade point average. However, they are no longer eligible for it if they take any time off between high school and college. It would be interesting to see how many students who take the first year after high school actually go back for a degree. I would imagine it is fairly low. And I love the idea of community college, as long as all of the credits transfer (my husband had a bad experience with that). It gets some of the general education classes out of the way without busting the budget too much.

I feel fortunate that I knew what I wanted to do with my life before ever leaving high school. It took a lot of the pressure off. The university I attended was $17,000 a year (now it is up to $22,000...craziness). Luckily most of it was paid by scholarships. And to think I used an education like that just to become a teacher, huh Mike? Hehehe.

Also, in most countries in continental europe, university is government funded. For example, I go to university in Belgium and I pay 550€ a year for university fees

It's better for a high school student to do a combo of volunteer work and a paying job, in my opinion. The job is good for the money, and the volunteer work is good for learning an on-the-job skill and to determine if it's the right career path for him/her.

My first job during high school was as a gas station attendant. It was good in the sense that it was extra money, but it wasn't a job where I was learning a skill.

Joe's son was going to enlist in the Air force as an officer to get his education paid for. I don't know if that's still the case, you know teenagers, but he is an Eagle Scout and has worked at many good jobs so I don't think getting scholarships will be too hard. I sure hope not! As for what he wants to be, it's changed several times.... Me I don't believe in a parent paying for all of the college expenses but I'm a stepmother and I knew how his parents believed when I married Joe so I'm stuck
