Cults are a fascination of mine...

I enjoy reading about Mormonism/FLDS, Scientology, Baha'i, and some of the Moonie stuff. I've also looked at the Jim Jones mass murders, David Koresh and Waco, Ruby Ridge, and the Heaven's Gate (Comet Hale-Bopp).

The mentality and psychology involved is quite a phenomenon.

How their mentalities are achieved and their conviction about their beliefs is no different from anyone else's!! That's what so interesting about it.

I love reading about cults, they are so fascinating

Raëlism is pretty interesting though it's debatable whether it is a cult or a religion http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raëlism

Interesting link. I donnot think these people would be the typical cult because there is really no violence. Violence would classify them as a negative cult because violence amongst other humans is universally negative in any evidently clear-thinking person's mind.

But, I do think they're batshit insane even though they're a peaceful people.

If you'd like some actual book titles and authors, I have a lot of suggestions. Especially when it comes to FLDS and Scientology. Let me know if you're interested and I'll send them along. :)

I've got to ask, how was Randy Weaver involved in a cult?

The one thing Ruby Ridge and Waco does have in common was the fact that the government used deadly force when they didn't have to.

Not so much the cult aspect - but the entire craziness with the "takedown" of both. Have you watched "Red State"??? That movie is very interesting when it shows the government's views.

Cults are interesting indeed. My main thought is how can one person make the others believe what they believe. How can someone truly have that much charisma? It makes me wonder..

The human mind is easily influenced, it doesn't take much more to almost completely control people. Organized religion is proof of this.

People are programmed to follow the herd from the get-go. From elementary school, to middle school and high school - no one wants to be the odd man out. Everyone tries to fit in - from hair, to clothes, to shoes. Peer pressure is used to not just negatively influence decisions, but it is manipulated by adults in order to have a positive outcome.

I'm just really glad that I'm a freak and don't give a shit about who the Joneses are - nevertheless trying to keep up with the bastards. Marching to the beat of my own drummer has kept me sane!!!

Never saw the movie, but I was in Idaho when the state went after the Feds for the killings at Ruby Ridge. Kind of gives you a different perspective what can happen when the feds come onto your property.

When people think of Waco, most only think about the "crazy church".
