I was just replying to your Zinn quote which after your most recent post I'm unable to tell if you're with or against him. ( referring only to that quote )

I'm with Zinn - he is afterall a combat vet of WW2.

Was it ever called Remembrance Day in the US of A ? I read the blurb about Canada in my OP link but not the one on the US so I'm about to do that now. I feel the need to educate myself.

It was Armistice Day here until after WW2:

I don't see why things like this need to have a specific day of remembrance. Those affected by war obviously dwell upon it every day. War begets more war. Tragedy begets more tragedy.. People who have lived these events or are directly affected by them will remember them til they die.

I sort of agree with what you're saying here.

Whether or not we call it "Veteran's Day" or whether we celebrate it in November or March matters little to me. What matters most is that we just remember those who fought for our country and pay tribute.

Dunce cap? Whatever man. I think you just like acting like a dickhead. Opinions don't need to be agreed with but that doesn't make it any less valid and I'm not stupid for stating such.

ok dana,a few things that you should be thankful for.....and i'm not having a go i'm just highlighting it

you wouldn't know what rap music is because if the axis had won the war hitlers idea of inferior races would have been exterminated, and he definately saw black people as inferior

you wouldn't be allowed to follow the fashions you do,as a conquered nation you would have been expected to wear a certain style of clothing

that weight loss regime you've been on,you wouldn't have needed it....you'd be used as forced labour in service of the reich, being fed nothing but basics...and not alot of that

and i tell you dana, you've had health issues in your life, because of that you wouldn't be here now...you'd have been euthenised

so it does effect you directly and you do have alot to be thankful for

What are you on about? I'm in no way saying that remembrance is a bad thing. I respect everyone whose served because Hell knows I wouldn't do it. Not that I'd be eligible with my birth defect.

This is what I took Dana to mean too. That they don't need a specific day but should always be remembered. That the effects of war are far reaching and last for a lifetime, for the people who lose loved ones or the people who have fought and have to live with what they have experienced. And of course all the people who have lived since then and enjoyed freedom.

And I do partly agree that rememberence should be ongoing throughout the year. But at the same time, having a specific day to commemorate is a good thing. It focuses attention and makes the masses stop, think and remember.

Thank you for expanding on what I was trying to get across.

Im not going to lie. Before I joined the Army veterans day was a free day off of school. Now its a day where I get discounts and free food at certain restaurants. I remember my fallen everyday, some were my good friends and some werent, but we all shared the common bond of brotherhood at war. Though I might not like the guy to my left, or the guy to my right might not like me, but we will sure as hell die for one another. I take a look at the memorial bracelets iev acquired within 2 years with my friends names on them, and every day I wish it was me instead. But such is life, it is what it is. I dont care if you celebrate veterens day, veterens day is for the guys like me who made it back. Memorial Day is for the guys who didnt make it back, and that one matters much more to me.

Just my few words on it.
