This is in my town. Think they should have their license revoked again as they are clearly too fucking stupid to sell alcohol!

[h=1]92-year-old woman asked for proof of age to buy bottle of whiskey[/h] By Vicky Lane A 92-YEAR-old woman has slammed the "ludicrous" rules that prevented a Harlow off-licence from selling her alcohol because she couldn’t prove she was over the legal age of 18.
Diane Taylor, of Gladdens Court, was shocked when staff at the One Stop Shop convenience store in The Stow refused to sell her a bottle of whisky on the grounds she did not have the "correct" identification documents.

Diane Taylor

The great-grandmother produced everything from her bus pass and OAP card to her pacemaker in a bid to prove her age but said staff still would not serve her.
"I was in a hurry and it caught me off guard when she asked to see some ID," said Mrs Taylor. "When I asked her to repeat herself it seemed so stupid that I thought she was complimenting me!
"But then I realised she was being serious so I pulled out everything from my bag – my bus pass, my OAP card, my blood donors card – even my pacemaker – but she said none of them were enough.
"When I asked her exactly what she wanted she said proof of age. But I don’t have a passport or driving licence so what did they expect me to do?"
The shop’s licence to sell alcohol was revoked by Harlow Council in 2007 after staff failed a series of test purchases, but the decision was overturned when the owners pledged to enforce a strict ‘no ID, no sale’ policy for anyone buying alcohol, regardless of how old they looked.
A One Stop Shop spokesman told the Star this week that the store had to enforce the policy or risk losing its licence.
"Although we are very sorry for the inconvenience caused, staff at the store are required to ask all customers for ID as a condition of its licence to sell alcohol," he added.

The dumbass should be fired and then when she tries to fight for her job, told she hasn't given enough reason as to why she deserves it...or simply just hung.

losing a license is a big deal. unless you get it in the staffs mind that it is mandatory for everybody to get carded then staff will start to ease up. At the risk of losing the liquor license I don't blame the store. And I would be willing to bet there is a sign at the counter that states they card everybody. In which case nobody is discriminated against and ergo no beef. It may sound like common sense was thrown out the window but IMO not this time.

It sounds stupid, but it makes sense why this happened.

When I worked retail, we had all these asinine rules regarding carding. If the person looked under 50 or *like they couldn't be your grandparent*, you had to card them. The temptation was there to just let people who you knew had to be over 21 to buy their booze without an ID, but you never knew when some manager or secret shopper was watching, or if the person was a minor who just looked older. Then, you had to deny alcohol to someone if you felt that alcohol was somehow going to end up in the hands of a minor. Once again, you don't know if you're being watched or something.

It's either walk that fine line between carding or not carding and possibly get in huge trouble and lose your job if you mess up just once, or just card everyone and be on the safe side.

Oh, and the police did stings too.

I hated it when people bought alcohol, just because of all the BS you had to deal with and all the moaning/complaining from customers who didn't want to show ID.

Here it doesn't matter how old you are my mother is 50 and still gets carded... I see no death of common sense... Common sense was her doing her job and not getting fired.

Oh giver me a fucking break! There is no reason why anyone should need proof that that woman is over 18! I also fail to see how a photo pension card dosen't prove she is over 18 either.

I would have thought she would have taken it as a compliment..

But in all honesty the store may have been given a warning by a licensing officer who had purchased goods without the proper ID days before.. He may have been in his later years but still working for the agency.. We really do not know the full story only her side..

Make up and disguise could have been used to send her in to see if again the store would sell without proper ID and they store would not have known..

All I am saying is the store could have been burned before and Liquor is probably a huge part of their business and they did not want to be shut down..

Then people would have said, how stupid of them not to ask for ID..

Damned if you and damned if you don't..

It's funny that I buy booze in that shop from time to time, last time was a couple of weeks ago. They didn't ask me or my friend for ID. I guess we look much older than this troublemaker. :24:

Yes I have. Why do you ask?

Because it doesn't seem so by the tone and gist of your posts. As I said before I agree that is was redicilous she was ID'd but it's completely understandable why the employee did it if one pays attention to the entire article. I wouldn't put my job on the line for an old woman or any other human for that matter either.

I had the same experience in retail...it's annoying as hell. People are obviously going to be outraged when you card them and they are CLEARLY over age, but, these cashiers are threatened constantly about stings and carding...it's lose/lose imo. The cashier is often on the front lines between angry customers and corporate bullcrap.

I agree with you. On top of that, carding anyone who appears they cannot be your grandparent is completely fucking subjective bullshit. That rule is as gray as not carding a 92 year old woman...yet people are supposed to follow it?

Idiot proofing society is so wrong. It takes out any value there is in the world for being intelligent.

Even with a corporate sting...why in the fucking hell would they use a person like this to risk losing a possibly valuable employee? There's no way in hell corporations could be so successful with actions this fucking retarded.

Clerk: Can i see your proof of age?
OLD lady: Sure sonny boy
*old lady spreads her legs and moths fly out*
Clerk mutters among the dust and moths flying around: Got it...

While i can understand the need to request proof of age because of the legal issues the store had in the past, it is rather ridiculous that a wrinkled old lady and the documents she produced did not suffice.
