We needed 4 new tires for our SUV and I had a hell of a time finding the right size in stock at any of our local places. And when I did find them, they were crap tires going for way too much money IMO.
So I ended up buying them on-line at TireRack... I was able to read many reviews and compare dozens of different brands. I ended up saving over $200 for the set of 4 while getting a much better tire.

It won't be long until we are buying everything on-line.

What will it cost to have them mounted and balanced? It's pretty reasonable where I am, but that not the case everywhere...

$12.50 per tire to have them mounted and balanced and $1 per tire for disposal.
It's the same cost if I bought them from the dealer or by mail so I didn't even factor that part into the cost.

The only difference was shipping and that cost $55, but even after paying that I saved over $200 while getting a much better tire... :dunno

could be worse. could have hubby's truck and tires that costs $2000 (and thats not including the mount and balance)

last year when i was getting my car serviced, they said a tired needed replacing. there was a nail in the side wall that was unrepairable and the new tired was going to cost me $175. i said no. they finished servicing the rest, i took it down the road to a tire repair place. they took the nail out and REPAIRED the hole for $15! havent had problems with it since! i hate when places tried to take advantage of me because im a female

If the nail was in fact in the side wall any reputable place would tell you to replace it

Think you will find that is pretty standard. I am no tire expert but I imagine the sidewall is much less of a dependable repair and they may not want the liability.

I usually find DiscountTireDirect.com to be cheaper with free shipping, but I'm guessing not all tire sizes and makes are like that though. Just worked out that way for me. I will never buy a tire from a local tire dealer unless they will meet the online price. It's all about best price now for everything! :)

I agree with you. I NEVER trust a side wall patch very long. My ex wife had to drive on one for about a week because they did not have the tire to match on her brand new car. I was nervous as heck letting her drive around on it while we waited on one to come in.

I just double checked with DiscountTireDirect.com pricing and I wouldn't have saved anything. But thanks for the link, I never heard of them before.

If it's a clean puncture like a nail in the sidewall, it can be patched without worry. The problem is that most sidewall breaches are tears which compromise the tires integrity... those I would never trust. (unless they were tires on my mother in laws car)

I checked the website as well and I can buy the same tires locally, mounted and balanced for a little less. Thanks for the link though! It's funny you posted it because the wife's van is getting close and I had just priced tires last week.

If you are interested in a place where you can see thousands of reviews, go to tirerack.com
You can see how they are rated for tire wear, road noise, dry traction, wet traction, and many other categories. It also lets you know the combined miles of all the reviewers... The reviews on my tires were by people that put over 14 million combined miles on them. It gives the reviews a little more weight imho
