what is the big deal about reading books?

In my adult like you can count on both hands the number of books I have read.

Couple of Ayn Rand. Atlas Shrugged and Fountainhead. Great reads if you are not a liberal :D

One on a true story of a Mexican prison break by a guy railroaded. Charles Bronson did a movie

Murder in Greenwich by Mark Furman. Yes that Furman. It was a great book.

I have ADHD. I have trouble concentrating to read books. Always was that way. I could read half a page of print and not have a clue what I read. Only found out a year ago I had ADHD. Anyway it takes a pretty interesting book for me to want to read it. If I start and find it interesting I won't put it down.
I think it comes down to the life long learning thing with me..

And books are a great way to keep learning. A good source of entertainment.

Ok it's hard to explain... maybe some of us women like bookish guys? :D

one does not have to read books to learn about life experiences.

I read a lot but just not books.

Being book smart does not mean anything. Just take Jim for example :D

I liked to read until my eyesight began to fail. Now I find I get a headache or fall asleep quickly when I start reading anything more than magazine articles.

Zorak's alright apart from when he is pretending to be a dinosaur and trying to scratch me like a Velociraptor. That's a bit annoying.

Hey, you ladies are the ones who were going on about wanting foreplay the other day!!! :24: :24: :24:

IMO lists are a starting place and with some of us they don't even count if we find something in someone else that we like even if they are all wrong for us.

Absolutely!!! There are many many things on my list (for instance, I can't see myself dating someone that doesn't have the same type of career path as me) but a really good sense of humor can make all the other things disappear. ;)

but to never ever finish a book? I just find that utterly wierd.

How'd he get through school??? LOL Seriously, that's weird.

Just my 2 cents, but that's completely different IMO. It sounds like the guy she dumped didn't care to even try to read a book. Not wanting to do something to better yourself and increase your knowledge...yeah, that's a turn off.

I wouldn't count reinacting Jurassic Park as foreplay :p

The guy barely got through school. English and Literature is mandatory and yet he didn't even really attempt to finish any of the books he was set whereas I read all the set texts, the "books you may like" and got my English teacher to recommend me other books. Looking back, we were really mismatched as a couple and it's no wonder we split up lol.

Yeah I agree with Natasha it is completely different. My ex before Zorak had dyslexia and found reading hard going but he still tried. And I do think that counts for a lot.

And to reply to Alien Allen's earlier post, reading to me is a big deal because it is something I am passionate about. I enjoy reading stories. I enjoy reading non-fiction (especially History). And I want to be able to share something I am passionate about with my partner. I've read 73 books this year so far (and that's including periods of not reading much at all) and I want to be able to discuss what I have read with someone who can appreciate what I am saying and who won't be bored by it or to not understand me.

My boyfriend reads all the time, he's incredibly intelligent by way of studying, and I admire that in him...I'm whatever intelligence level I am just by living, and I don't quite like that about myself, so I look up to him. Wish I was more of a reader. I hope when I am done with school reading will become a hobby...just more physical and interactive by nature. Truly respect people who read though.

No one thinks it's bad for you to not like reading, obviously everyone is different. If we were all the same, life sure would be boring. It's just that someone who DOES have a passion for reading tends to enjoy the company of someone who also reads. I really like sharing how awesome a story is with someone, and have always wanted someone to read with. I have lots of people in my life who hate reading, though. And I love them just the same. ;)

I think the only thing I have going for me other than not being super hairy is that I love reading and am an intellectual.

These 2 threads have been an eye-opener for me. Funny that we women are the ones always accused of being so touchy but it seems that you guys are very defensive about our lists. ;)

LOL very true, I think though that all these lists go out the window when chemistry butts its nose in :D

Absolutely agree w/ you there. I think that's where some of the defensiveness is coming in. Big difference between "turn-offs" and "deal breakers." LOL

Just so everyone is clear... I haven't taken offense to anything said, I was more finding it amusing that I don't seem to match up with most of the lists here. That's okay though, different people find different things attractive. ;)
