When we lost our belongings in storage last June 2011, included are some of our personal files etc containing personal information like:

1) SSS #
2) bank/ savings account #s
3) old checks with copies of signature
4) reserve checks of current checking account
5) Nursing license card copies
6) old driver's license card
7) computer back-up disks ( with pics, documents,files etc)

and maybe more.....( that's all that come to mind atm)

I know of a few like closing the current bank account, monitoring charges/withdrawals on bank accounts etc that needs to be done. How else can I protect myself due to this event ?? Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks :D

The best thing you can do is pay attention to things like your credit report, your bank account statements, etc. You lost enough information for someone who looks similar to you, to pretty safely steal your identity, and that's terrifying. You may not need to close your accounts, but rather ask them to change the number (I assume that can be done???).

I don't think you can change your social security number, but like Darrell said watch the credit reports....you can switch your account number at the bank, just tell them the reason why...have you contacted the storage company and see what their policy is on when they lose a customer?

I almost forgot, immediately contact the California Board of Registered Nursing, and report your license copies being lost. The last thing you want is someone trying to practice as an RN with YOUR license.

It's terrifying indeed. I feel like a sitting duck ready to be fired at anytime :willy_nilly:

I'll do those, thanks

I did contact the storage and they can't help me recover those files even if I told them I'll pay for those items. It had something to do with Privacy act for that person/company that bought the unit at auction. Some of those companies/bidders, I was told will gather up the items and return back some items to the storage office hence I was told to wait. Haven't heard a word that there was a return for my requested items :(

contact the credit companies

contact the police and see if they have any ideas as you need to treat it like the stuff was stolen and not lost.

OK...who buys stuff like that? I know PD's situation. I just don't get how that gives someone the right to sell off her personal information. That's just messed up. :willy_nilly:

There is a tv show where they bid on storage locker items when people in effect abandoned the storage locker. Not sure if it always go like that but on the show they bid without seeing the contents.

They were inadvertently included in the items placed on storage that was lost at auction ( whole package deal :p)

I know it's messed up, however, nothing i can do but accept it and deal with consequences at this time. It's OK, i'll live :D

Thanks

Sorry, I misunderstood. What a mess, I feel bad for you, I hope it's just inconvenient and nothing bad happens to your credit or reputation!

So did the storage rental place screw up and sell your stuff by accident or was it sold because of a missed payment.

If the storage rental place screwed up, I would demand that they pay for a credit monitoring place to safeguard your info for the next year or two. It's not expensive, but well worth the money if you have that many items floating around.

Nah, it's cool :D

I hope so too......and pls don't feel bad for me, I am good. There's far greater graces to be thankful for that outweighs the bad. Thx

sold because of a missed payment

This and when i was ready to pay, they've already auctioned out the units, 2 hours ago. I asked to buy/outbid the 2 storage units. But there was nothing they can do to help me. Ah well, things happen
