Can you answer a question for me? I have a pair of hunting boots which are made by Rocky. They are gore-tex & thinsulite lined. They retail for about $200. I have had them for a number of years and for a good part of that they have sat on the carpeted floor of my closet. I just moved them and it seems the soles have become like hot asphalt. Has to be a chemical reaction in my opinion. I wonder what is going on. Needless to say after getting black stuff all over me and figuring oiut if I wear them it won't be long I would be barefoot I threw them away.

This is a known issue with Rocky boots... just do a quick internet search and you will find hundreds of complaints with this same problem.

Some say it's because they do not use a vibram soles. Rocky says that their boots have a shelf life :24:
But it isn't anything you did... stay away from them or you will be having the same problem. It looks like the problem hasn't been addressed by the company yet.

Oh, you can take them to a cobbler and have them resoled for about $75. If the leather uppers are in good shape, it might be worth it.

They are a waterproof manmade upper with gore-tex & thinsulite. I suppose I am in the market for boots.

I had not heard of this being an issue and was afraid it was a chemical reaction between the carpet and the shoe but looks like just defective boots.

before you chuck them, cut one open. You will find this very thin rubbery plastic lining, and I mean very thin. That is the goretex, pretty weird stuff. It will hold water but let moisture permeate.

And just about all insulated boots have Thinsulate now days.

Funny thing about that pair of boots. I wore them a lot because they were so well insulated and waterproof. I am a real wimp about cold feet. I walked through a swamp into my metal treestand one particularly cold morning. After about 2 hours of sitting very still I decided to stretch. I could not move. Seems my boots were frozen to my stand. It took several minutes to finally break them free.
