I'd only shoot if it meant saving either my life or somebody else's.

You walk around a corner and see a man who has a club raised above his head that is apparently going to strike a woman laying on the ground defenseless. You're carrying a sidearm, and you have a split moment to think, realizing that if you hesitate one extra second, chances are that woman on the ground is going to be killed. Do you shoot the man to save the woman?

I'd yell and get his attention away from the woman onto me, giving her a chance to escape....then I'd sit and wait for the police to arrive. If I had to, I'd fire a shot in the air just to let him know that I'm not just whistling dixie;)

You don't have the time to waste a shot in the air (and you NEVER shoot in the air because that bullet has to come down somewhere LOL)

OR say you fire a warning shot and you can see that the man is still going to swing the bat at the woman, do you shoot?

Yes....but hopefully I'm a good enough shot to just shoot him in the arm, forcing him to let go of the bat. I mean, if I were to own a gun, I'd take lessons on how to shoot it......wouldn't I?

You would be amazed at how many people own guns and don't know how to use them LOL Someone is scared, they go out buy a gun, never practice with it, and then if they need it, worse things can happen (particularly people who leave them laying around the house with children around).

That said, by the same token, you should not only know how to use one if you own one (as well as practice), but also know your laws about their use.

The example I was giving you looking for an answer from you is a classic reason why when you carry a firearm (if you're legally able to do so), you should know the law as well.

Per the situation I gave you, I mentioned that you just walked around the corner and saw what was taking place at that moment in time (man going to hit a woman). Fact is, you have no clue how those two came to be in their position when you came upon them. You shoot the man, and you find out later that it was actually the woman who was the aggressor and it was the man who thought he was defending his life, you're going to be in a world of trouble. You don't carry a weapon to play cop, you carry it to save YOUR life only or your immediate loved ones, and you know what the situation is from start to finish.

This isn't meant as a knock, but you're watching too much TV if you think you're going to hit someone in the arm and leg if that's where you're intentionally aiming at.

lol..so if I turn a corner and find a huge man standing over a mere woman with a bat in the air getting ready to crush her brains in with it, I should wonder if it was HER who was the aggressor?...lol...are you freaking serious?!? #1, I DON'T own a gun let alone carry one, and if I ever came across a situation like the one you just described I'd find the nearest rock, get as close as I could to the bastard and hit him in the head with it.....after that who knows, perhaps he'd come after me but at least I tried and at least I have the chance to run and get away from him until the police show up. What would U do?

What if the man was the same size as the woman, of if the woman was larger than the man? What if it were two men instead of a woman and man?

Yes, I'm serious. Unless if you witnessed the complete series of events leading up to the time you may need to use a weapon , you don't unholster it. General rule, you don't carry a sidearm to protect others, you carry a sidearm to protect yourself.

We're getting off topic, apologies, again, just pointing out to know your local laws.

So you'd do nothing? Unless you yourself were being threatened, you'd just keep walking, or would you stand there and watch? Myself, I'd go with my instinct, it very rarely fails me.

I would call the Police and observe the situation as long as I don't put myself in danger.

Now, someone in help who put themselves in a bad situation without having to deal with an altercation is a different story.

So, what would you tell the police, that you stood there and watched the guy bash a womans brains in with a baseball bat and did nothing? I don't know.....it just doesn't seem right to me, I don't think I could do nothing. Calling the police is a given, I'd do that first and foremost...but I don't think I'd be able to stand by without doing something...anything....or else I wouldn't be able to sleep at night. I'm not saying you're wrong, in fact, I'm probably the one who's wrong for getting involved, but I don't think I'd be able to help it....js.

Wanting to get involved and help is a commendable trait IMO. However, and although this may sound unemotional, you always need to watch yourself as to what could happen to YOU if you do decide to get involved. Now, add getting involved into the mix of a confrontation between two parties you may not have a clue about, and you've greatly increased your chances that the outcome isn't going to be a pleasant one for you. One thing to risk your life going into a burning building, another IMO to get in between two people you know nothing about.

How many times do cops go to domestic disputes where the guy is kicking the crap out of the woman, only to have the woman jump on the cops if they try to take her spouse away? Not saying that is always the case, but as a bystander, you may not have a clue as to what you're jumping into.

I would like to participate but deciphering your posts is a headache. :thumbdown

Glad to see I'm not the only one.

Well, all I can say is this....if I'm ever in a situation where some man attacks me on the street and is about to bash my head open with a baseball bat, I hope that somebody somewhere would find it in their heart to come to MY rescue....nuff said.
