Pj, are you mechanically / electrically inclined at all? It might be someting simple that you could fix with some guidance, maybe?

What do you have?

1. Heat pump with air handler
2. Heat pump with gas furace
3. AC with gas furance
4. AC with module blower

5. Is the t-stat hardwired or battery?

What year was it installed, and have you had any issues with the system previously?

Does it make any noise whatsoever when you try to turn it on, and if it makes any noises, where does it come from?

Watch out PJ...Joe is an HVAC salesman. He'll have you trading up to a 23 SEER, multi-stage, variable speed 99.9999999% efficient zoned system.

Never trust a sales weasle......

Low blow, and you know I hate that term:24: You also realize that 97% of my time isn't dealing with homeowners, but LICENSED contractors;) (heck, the last job I went out to trouble shoot with a licensed contractor in the business for over 20 years had to use my manometer because he didn't even have one).

We've also discussed the fact and agree that once you go to a 2 stage compressor, there is normally no ROI.

FYI, here in NC, any new construction two story house must be able to maintain a two degree temperature differential, and if a manual J and D was performed and duct work laid out properly, a zoned system can actually save you money:p That said, with the new communicating systems out now with higher end units that use a specific communicating t-stat to ease installation, sometimes the wiring on a zoned variable speed system can be more than interesting to say the least.

Sorry to hear that PJ. I hope Joe can help you get it going again. It's another over 100 degree day here again but it's supposed to cool down some tomorrow. Hope it does for you too.

That's probably the safest course of action. Is your system still under warranty? If not, no sense waiting for the installing company to come out on Tuesday if you can get help today.

it is still under warranty (thank God!) also I know the owner of the company who did the instillation and I will be dropping her a line about techs not being available on weekends...

In NC it's mandatory for a HVAC company to include a 1 year labor warranty on all new installations. Most systems come with a manufacturers 5 year parts warranty (including compressor), and for the last 5 years or so, most manufacturers have been offering 10 years parts as long as the system is registered (if not registered, it reverts back to 5 years).

Not to burst your bubble (and perhaps prepare you), but usually the most expensive component of a HVAC service bill is labor.

A reversing valve costs about 30% of what a compressor would cost (no charge to you under warranty), but labor wise (which you could have to pay) a reversing valve is just as a PITA to change as a compressor, and labor wise, you may not see much difference dollar wise.

If you're lucky, it's a small electrical component or something that needs cleaning that has affected the system.

Ours just went Friday. Air is cold from the vent but not blowing hard enough to make a difference...It kicks on, freon doesn't appear low. I went and changed our filters but no ah ah. I'd guess the duct is either clogged or busted...

Hope yours is fixed now, PJ!
