While forgetting how to access voicemail seems a bit odd, expecting you to leave a message that they may only get 5 hours later doesn't seem odd to me.

Personally, I have a mobile for MY convenience, not for anyone else's. It annoys me when people think I somehow owe it to them to be permanently available to them, just because I happen to have a mobile.
