Now that the photography contest is over, I can post up the rest of my shots from Bonaventure. This is a beautiful place that sits on the river in Savannah, GA. If you ever visit Savannah, take the time to go visit. There are some interesting people buried there. ;)

One of the entrance roads (similar to my contest entry, but I liked the picture I entered better b/c I felt there was a sense of enclosure b/c there was no open space w/o trees (does that make sense???).

The marker at Johnny Mercer's grave. It was kind of eery...these photos were taken on my birthday, June 24th. Mr. Mercer died on June 25th and his wife, who is buried next to him, was born on June 25th!!!

Possibly the most interesting final resting place I've seen in a public cemetery.

General Robert Anderson, member of the Confederate States Army. He was the acting police chief of Savannah when he passed away at the age of 52.

Richard Arnold. This gentleman was the mayor of Savannah. He presented the city of Savannah to General Sherman as a Christmas present in exchange for not burning the city. Sherman accepted, turned around, and marched to Atlanta...the rest is history.

Wow. That's the most beautiful cemetery I've ever seen. I wish I could lay there when I'm dead.
It all looks like some gothic fairy forest. <3

You're reminding me of the cool stuff in my home state that I miss! Savannah is a cool city! It's been a long time since I've been there. Lots of cool, old historic places along the Georgia coast to see. :)

I love those trees. What are they called?? MY fave is that of Eliza Wilhelmina tomb pic :thumbup

I'm not sure on the trees, but the Spanish Moss hanging from them is what makes them so beautiful. It's actually against the law to remove the moss from the trees as it sometimes contains chiggers and could cause an infestation. I just found this legend and hadn't heard it before...thought it was kinda neat:

As the story goes; there was once a traveler who came with his Spanish fiancée in the 1700s to start a plantation near the city of Charleston SC. She was a beautiful bride-to-be with long flowing raven hair. As the couple was walking over the plantation sight[sic] near the forest, and making plans for their future, they were suddenly attacked by a band of Cherokee who were not happy to share the land of their forefathers with strangers. As a final warning to stay away from the Cherokee nation, they cut off the long dark hair of the bride-to-be and threw it up in an old live oak tree. As the people came back day after day and week after week, they began to notice the hair had shriveled and turned grey and had begun spreading from tree to tree. Over the years the moss spread from South Carolina to Georgia and Florida. To this day, if one stands under a live oak tree, one will see the moss jump from tree to tree and defend itself with a large army of beetles.[5]

It is one of my favorite places in the world to be. I've been to Savannah hundreds of times and still everytime I go I walk down River St and go into all the stores. Then I walk back up to where I'm parked on the riverwalk and just enjoy the sights and sounds. If I could find a job there, I'd be living in Savannah right now. I'm just patiently waiting until I can find one, LOL

Why are cemeteries so cool looking lol? It's the creepiest thing, but I find them so beautiful and fascinating. Great shots. I went to an old cemetery on a field trip (ohhh public school) in third grade and they asked us to shade a headstone on paper with a crayon and I refused. My daddy taught me not to disrespect the dead lol!

I imagine there's probably no amount of money that can get you a plot in there now, is there?
Actually..................
