I was a waitress for 3 months about 10 years ago. It sucked. I am not a people person and I have zero skills in that department. It takes a special kind of person to be able to do that kind of job well. Kudos to them.

I have done it for most of my working career....and I do see how others treat me...and man sometimes I have to wonder who trained some of these people...

I think the problem mainly lies on the fact that people expect those who serve them (whether it be food, drink, banking, cash register, etc.) want more and really expect more for their dollar, but you have to also understand that they are working and just doing their job.

It's awful, workers are expected to take so much abuse, and their every mistake, incompetency, and attitude is criticized. Idk, I see that sometimes customer service reps/workers are rude when customers are not doing anything to provoke the attitude, but work on the other side and it's rather eye opening. :eek

I tell my people kill them with a smile. It pisses he patients off more but by the end of the day no one can say shit cause you never did anything wrong and if the smile doesnt work use a dull spoon.

I remember an associate getting ripped apart because of her being African American. The customer made her cry and she came to the back room crying her eyes out and three people watched her get berated and not one customer did anything to stop the guy...people are just sick to think they can do this...

I have worked in customer service the last 9 years. I don't typically deal direct with the public, but often with my customer's customers. I tend to go out of my way to treat customer service people with the highest of respect and kindness because of the abuse we typically take. I had a lady in Sam's tell me once how my membership was expired and I could not pass through the checkout. The woman actually flinched when she said it. She was waiting for me to blow up. She says it happens EVERYDAY. I am not sure why I should tear HER a new asshole because MY parents (whose account I piggyback on) had not been renewed yet and they had not told me. It often boils down to a person not taking responsibility for their own actions. I simply ran to the service desk and paid the renewal for us all. I often pay for my parents anyway because they have watched my daughter as daycare for years and never asked for a dime.

I worked on the sales floor at Best Buy for two months, aside from that I've been in IT for the last 10 years... so I guess that somewhat counts as customer service, only my customers have almost been exclusively internal.

I worked as Customer Service Rep. and then later as a Customer Service Supervisor for a health insurance company. When the customer got too irate you could pass the call to your supervisor, so it wasn't that bad. But when I was the supervisor most of my day was filled with irate customers. I let them vent, treated them with respect and tried to solve their problem. Basically, they just want to know that someone is on their side and trying to help them. It was a stressful job and I'm glad I don't do it anymore but someone had to lol.

at the bank esclation levels were not as easy because the district manager did not want his cell phone number given to anyone. the way it worked was, the branch manager would email the DM and he would call the customer from a non-listed number and listen to the persons complaint(s) once that was settled then the people responsible would be addressed (if branch employees were to blame) it seemed rather hushed but to protect all responsible I could understand it better.

I worked retail for a little over two years and didn't really mind the customers. Most of them were just your average Joe and were tolerable. Occasionally I'd have that crazy customer who would go ballistic over something stupid, but I usually cared less. I just let them vent and passed it on to the supervisor. I refused to get upset over the actions of customers because it just wasn't worth it.

The part of retail I hated the most was the fact that I had to stand at a register for hours and do the same mindless thing over and over and over again. There were times when I would zone out and not even remember the last few customers because the job was just so boring. Eight hour shifts were the worst because they felt like eternity.

The worst part of my job was the managers though. Most were on a power trip and treated the employees under them like crap.

The worst part was, I was in high school, so I didn't even really need the money. I was glad when college came and I got out of that place. Working in an office has it's share of drama and annoying bosses, but it beats retail any day.

I'm glad I found this thread. I was just thinking about Customer Service.

I have worked mainly in some sort of Customer Service role most of my working life. The one thing that I have learned is that I have absolutely NO desire to become a manager in Customer Service. Why? Because the moment I had some idiot going off about something that typically was their own fault, I was able to pass them along to the higher paid individual to deal with.

Personally, I can't stand customer service jobs. While I love working with people, talking with people and helping people ... it seems as if though many American's walk into a store or shop and see the customer service person as an enemy right off the bat. This mentality is so strange to me. Typically I hear people say, "They are going to try to rip me off somehow." What a paranoid mind set and simply not true. Are there business' that do shady activity for monetary gain ... of course but I very much doubt that it is as common as widely believed.

All I could do is smile and treat the person with respect and hope that they would return the respect for a fellow Human. Sadly ... that is not always the case.

Of course, I have also been on the other side of the coin where I have dealt with customer service reps that are a complete joke. No eye contact, no personality and act as if though you are the biggest pain in their ass just for being there. I don't understand that mentality either ... I typically figure that this person is probably having a bad day and has been abused by other customers. Still ... to keep that negative attitude and use it against new customers who these people have yet to even deal with is pretty immature and weak minded.

If I was to give advice to people who deal with customer service reps ... I would say, "Keep this in mind: They are people, just like you, who are trying to pay their bills by doing a job that they probably don't really want. Respect is a two-way street."
