So what kind of mother lets her 4 year old daughter out of her site long enough to be raped?

I would be afraid to judge her parenting, because I would never want to eat my words. Though I'd like to think I would be watching and something like this would never happen, I think it can to even the best parent.

Yes, it could happen to the best parent...

Yet people don't have a problem talking about the death penalty for a 16 year old boy for what he did here...

They can talk about him and speculate why he did it and what he deserves, but they would only be guessing just like why the mother let her daughter alone.

I haven't supported the death penalty for this person, and I think his age is of slight significance. By 17 his frontal lobe isn't giving him the best of decision making skills, but 5 years for rape is a bit slender.

I hope you aren't putting the teenager's actions on par with the mother's; while we can only guess motives, one for rape is a little more obviously malicious...the likelihood of him raping her to protect her from her negligent mother or something is a bit small. :S

That said, I think mandating parenting classes in a situation like this couldn't hurt.

In no way am I excusing what this boy did. But him only being 16 does need to be taken into consideration. You cannot make a snap judgement and say that all 16 year olds are mature enough to understand the consequences of their actions just like you can't assume that this mother wasn't watching her child. That was the distinction I was making.

And for anyone to come to the conclusion that this boy should be executed is just plane sick.

He raped a child, course he should be hung. He's a paedophile, a kiddy fiddler, a disgrace. He knows the difference between right and wrong and to keep that peice of shit imprisoned is a waste of money, he CANNOT be rehabilitated. Hang him.

Unless he is proven mentally incompetent or developmentally delayed, whether he could predict the consequences of his actions or not should be irrelevant to his sentencing, in my opinion. He will hopefully learn them now.

Exactly, I doubt if the mum had been wary of where the child was, he would of done such a depraved act on the toddler

Well you wanted that person raped in prison, as far as I know, even if the boy does get raped in prison, when has that ever stop that person or another person from raping more children? Draconian measures are not really helpful

It works that way in America, for good behaviour they normally half the sentence (unless I am incorrect)

The inmates I work with get 1 day off every 6 days for good behavior...not too sure how it works. I know some people get eligible for early release for good behavior when crowding is an issue.
