I am sorry to hear about the potential loss for a job due to issues re: your references.

I think it's worth the try to call the person who has your app and ask whom you've placed as reference. So maybe in the next apps, and an interview in the future, then you'll have an idea- who not to put as reference.

Good luck and hope you find a job soon :)

I'd be willing to be it's b/c they don't answer calls from numbers they don't recognize. I don't, either, but if I know that someone has used me for a reference I do b/c you never know if it might be the job prospect calling. Sorry your people let you down, DK. :(

They KNEW I was using them, I've talked to everyone I've used as a reference beforehand to make sure it was ok and they KNEW that they might be getting calls from businesses in New York about me, this just makes me wonder how many other times I've been passed over on jobs because places couldn't get a hold of them.

ijusst was asked by a friend for the same... but I've been getting so much spam lately... i let all calls go to Vm if I don't know it... and all back the real people who leave voice mails.

I agree with Tims and Zirc's suggestions, i you want the job... show them to mean business. Ask for a paid trial period while she waits to hear back on references? It's worked for me before.

It's not like I'm just putting people down without asking them and expecting them to pick up some strange number and vouch for me, they all knew full well that they might be getting called, I think I have a right to be upset about this don't I? And I do want the job, you have no idea how bad I need it, I do plan on calling her back.

Hey now... not saying you don't have a right to be upset or that you don't really want/need this job... was just stating how i handle jobs I wanted.. I was close to harassing them daily if i got it yet.

I know I'm getting a call soon for a reference check... and i still don't answer my phone right off the bat... is what I am saying. maybe check to see if sh's leaving messages or just hanging up when they don't pick up.

I'm going to call her back and see if there's anything I can do to improve my chances of getting the job, and who I used as references so I know never to use them again.

Ummm, that's pretty much what I was saying. I assumed that you told them you were using them as a reference (as everyone SHOULD when using people for references) and, therefore, they should've answered their phones even if they didn't know the number that came up.

I'd like to believe that a person that this company places so much trust in and gives so many responsibilities would be intelligent enough to take the time difference into account when calling out of state references.

Admittedly, I'm wondering that all this "reference stuff" works by contacting other people by phone. Here, in Germany, you get a reference letter from every employer you've ever been working for. Whenever applying for a job you attach copies of all of these reference letters.
I really wonder why over there it is handled in such a complicated way (which doesn't seem to work well).

:-/

One would hope so...but then again, I've known a LOT of idiots w/ authority that they can't properly handle.

I'm sorry to see the references are not working out.. Is this the same job you applied for at McD?..

What I'm going to say, might sound incredible, but it is the truth..
Years ago, when my youngest daughter was in high school, she applied for her first job ever... at Burger King..
She was lucky and got it, but later on she found out that the person that interviewed her, was not the one doing the background checks... It was another teenager that had started working there a few months before her!.. :eek

I sincerely hope the owner of the franchise where you applied is nothing like the one she used to work for and they have someone that knows how to check background information and references..

Yeah the same job. It doesn't sound that incredible, important jobs are rarely left up to the most capable person for the job.

have not read every post so maybe this has been mentioned

before you place blame on the references I would first suspect McDonalds is the one giving you a line

They had a bazillion applications. The easiest way to avoid confrontations is to give a bull shit story such as nobody answered their calls.

That may not be what happened but it is just as likely they had already ruled you out or others were passed ahead of you

It sucks but keep your head up and continue to think positive

The importance of a follow up can guarantee you a job or failure..

So following up with both the person who interviewed you as well as the references is critical in getting good results..

Since people learn from mistakes or potential mistakes, let it be a good learning experience to write down the name and number of the references you plan to use, advise them they will be on applications and follow up with them on a regular basis right after interviews.

Ask your references to email / text or even call you after they get a call so you know when the potential job interviewer in actually following up on these people.. If not it is a good idea to follow up with the interviewer to see what the status of your job is..

Most important, never stop looking for a job no matter how confident you feel about the interview of position as you never know what else you may find..

Yeah the thought has definitely occurred to me that it's just an excuse, that's why I'm not calling people up bitching them out over it because I don't know for sure if I'm being deceived or not.

If it is any consolation my son applied for a job with the police department as a service aide. He already was an Lt. on the fire department although it is volunteer. Anyway there were over 500 applications. He got to the final 15 but no further. It is damn tough to find jobs so ya just gotta keep at it.
