Baby Sandhill Crane (2 large pics)

I got a couple of shots this morning. Not very clear as they are pretty far down the yard, but you still get the idea It's so cool! It's parents have tried and failed for a few years now. This is their first baby. It's grown since we first saw it the other day. Hopefully soon either PS or I will get better ones as we get closer. I have to get ready for work so I can't hunt them down this morning. But it's soo freaking cute. These do not do it justice but I had to share anyway. We're so happy for them

hehehehehehehe.... Isn't it? We're hoping w/in a few days they'll come back up to the house. I've put seed out for them for years so they're used to us. But right now she/he is learning down by the swamp. I'm just glad it's still here and nothing has gotten it yet. (kwx3!!!) Tho, I'd hate to be whatever tries. Their beaks can do some damage I imagine...

We have Blue Herons here, but they fly so silently and fast over the creek, that I have never been able to get a picture of them..

You be very careful around ma & pa Sandhills when they have chicks. They can and will attack humans. Them beaks will poke your eye out just like your mama used to tell ya about sticks.

I've never even seen a baby heron before, we get full grown ones around but I've no idea where they nest!

We have many 80ft to 100 ft oak trees here, and that's where they have their nests.
I've never seen a nest in all the years we've been here. I know the general location where they are, but they seem to be experts in hiding them.. There are many other wild animals that I'm sure would love to have a blue heron meal.. :willy_nilly:

They fly late in the afternoon-early evening, close to the water, looking for fish.. but they are so fast and silent, that one second is enough time to miss them.. you see them.. and poof!!.. they are gone!!!... :eek

Yeah? I'm hoping as we're starting to get more sunshine I can get out to some different places soon, I'll keep this one in mind!

Y'all keep your fingers crossed. We got hammered on Wednesday & Thursday w/massive thunderstorms. I haven't seen them since Hopefully our little family made it through ok. I'm hoping we get a glimpse of them walking around today - with their baby in tow....
