Earthquake in California this week?

Fortunately, I'm relatively safe from harm where I am... here in the Valley, our soil type and relative lack of nearby faults prevent us from sustaining any type of serious damage. There was an article about it a few years back, I'll see if I can find it or something else that details that information better than I can remember. The closest fault to me is the Sierra Nevada fault, which was responsible for an earthquake in the late 1800s on the other side of the Sierra Nevada's from where I live, though it was felt strongly as far north as Sacramento.

A huge earthquake in the San Francisco bay area could have a tsunami effect on us, if a perfect series of events were to occur anyway.

Juz in case it happens, it would be my very first high magnitude /richter scale earthquake in California medo_musica.gif

I am wondering and am not sure if you're near Coalinga ( Fresno county). There was an earthquake in Coalinga in May 1983 with a 6.7 magnitude. It caused some damage to that town where they had to rebuild a 12 block section of the town. From Wikipedia, it says due to an unknown fault  So am hoping you wouldnt be affected by that IF just in case that activates :(

I was born and lived for 21 years in an earthquake zone similar to California, and I can tell you that they are kind of difficult to predict. There are too many variables to pinpoint the day or time..
It has to do with the kind of fault that is affected, how deep it originates, and also the physical plate -I forget the exact name right now-... and how the plate moves: up and down... or sideways..

Considering all that has happened lately in other parts of the world, it is possible that a plate under California could be on the same line with any of the other parts, like Japan, that have recently had earth movements, and there could be some tremors or an earthquake.. There might have been some in the last few days, but they probably were small and weak, so you didn't feel them.
By the way, anything below 5 or 6 is considered a "tremor"..

I certainly hope there isn't one... My son and daughter in law moved to the SF area last August, and experienced their first tremor on the first week after they got there...
Needles to say, they were scared and wanted to come back east that same day.. :eek :p

Great... I just needed to know that :willy_nilly:

I'm basically 60 miles directly east of where that hit.

edit: because I apparently don't know the difference between east and west

There are earthquakes on a daily basis in California, not very many near me, but you're right that most of them are barely detectable.

we had a 6.4 earth quake hit Ottawa Ontario and parts of Quebec today. happened at 1:30 pm today. its making its way around the world this earth moving.

With this information re: Ring of Fire, Canada is included.....so maybe that's a precursor?

Wikipedia info : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Ring_of_Fire

Quoted : In the western United States lies the Cascade Volcanic Arc. It includes nearly 20 major volcanoes, among a total of over 4,000 separate volcanic vents including numerous stratovolcanoes, shield volcanoes, lava domes, and cinder cones, along with a few isolated examples of rarer volcanic forms such as tuyas. Volcanism in the arc began about 37 million years ago, however, most of the present-day Cascade volcanoes are less than 2,000,000 years old, and the highest peaks are less than 100,000 years old. It formed by subduction of the Gorda and Juan de Fuca plates at the Cascadia subduction zone. This is a 680 mi (1,094 km) long fault, running 50 mi (80 km) off the west-coast of the Pacific Northwest from Northern California to Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The plates move at a relative rate of over 0.4 inches (10 mm) per year at a somewhat oblique angle to the subduction zone.

Because of the very large fault area, the Cascadia subduction zone can produce very large earthquakes, magnitude 9.0 or greater, if rupture occurred.

Sorry....I didn't mean to be the bearer of bad news :(

I guess it's just gonna be a warning for all Californians. Given I am about 7 hours away from San Francisco, I am not even sure which faults are in Southern Cali where I am at. Still looking for answers....:willy_nilly:

I suppose IF the Californian Otzers- I believe Retro, Wyndex and myself ( Idk :dunno if there are any others ) dont post anymore on Saturday or within the next few days, then you'll know what happened :(

I'll speak for myself- I will miss Otz and I guess I shall see you all on the other side :D

Where abouts in California are you? and yeah, I think the three of us are it, at least as far as people that post somewhat regularly go.

edit: missed the Southern California part

as far as faults go... this covers most of 'em

My concern is this: Nuclear power plants

You must already know there's a nuclear plant by Central Coast ( San Luis Obispo ) and am an hour away from San Onofre in San Diego. :(

As a State employee hence a Public servant, we're alerted to get ready for disaster to strike ( we're mandated to help ) given we can be the 2nd Japan. Maybe much worst given we have 2 Nuclear power plants :p

:thumbup... There is movement underground at all times and all over the world, even in Pa, NJ, NY... The only way to know when one is happening is to look at a seismograph. There is a web site with it.. I don't have time right now to go searching for it, but if you do, there is a lot of info in there...:)

Sorry Mystic, I missed your post the other day and my cable has been out for days, so I haven't watched any news at all..
Hope everything is okay where you live..:flowers:

It could be ... the ring of fire extends all the way from the north to the south pole..
