You're getting as bad as the Brits about changing names. These are Loons and I still have to get one. I've been trying for years and haven't been lucky yet. Someday I hope.

My best friends parents have a cottage in mid Michigan and there were loons there all the time

I'm thinking you are a bit confused. The one I posted is more like a duck than a loon. The only similarity is both are black and white. I googled Loons in Michigan and they came up with the same thing I did. http://www.michiganloons.com/

Loons have similar colouring but Loons are bigger, have longer necks, different shaped bills and red eyes.
