.... is what happens when I try to shoot something in flight.

#1 - I'm not ready and am usually cropped to far away. This time it was the opposite and because I'm not used to the push / pull zoom yet I blew it.

#2 - They will always fly away from me.

#3 - Incorrect shutter speed.

#4 - Light is in the wrong place.

In sequence.............

When trying to capture pictures of wildlife, you need to stop thinking like a photographer and start thinking like a hunter.

There wasn't any brush around to hide behind or a tree to climb. Maybe a heron suit would work. Waddaya think?

In-flight shots can be tricky and frustrating, speaking from experience. A blue heron would be a neat one to get.

I have some but not the one I want. I want one coming just about right at me or at least with just blue sky as a background. Not like this stupid thing.

I like the idea of the shots in your OP. They show off the size of its wings (and the bird as well) beautifully. All you needed was a better angle.

In that situation you would need to crawl on your belly in the mud, now that's hardcore :D

Pffttt... they are kinda out of focus but ya.. I can see the toes.

Take this buzzard. It's ok. Kinda boring sitting up on the roof. But look at that toenail (claw). ow

I've posted him before here:

Post #15 if you care to look :D

What can I say? I like the legs, feet & toes of birds. Like our Hawks. Wicked long & sharp looking w/sturdy thighs. Truly Raptors.:cool

Sandhills look so cute coming in for a landing. All leg and all ganglie.
