i associate "redneck" with the Rebel Flag. i dont care much for people who have and/or hang rebel flags

It's fine and mostly patriotic. I don't judge people's intentions. I only fly the flag of ME! :24: I fly the Jennifer flag high and proudly!

Pardon my bluntness, but that's asinine. How can you judge a person based on a frigging flag that they own??? Seriously??? Not everybody that has a rebel flag in their possession is a Klansman, redneck, or a member of the Aryan Nation, yanno. For some people it's just a part of their Southern heritage. Shame that you dislike them b/c of your misconceptions.

where im from, people have them because they are racists and the only part of the southern heritage they're proud of is because they are white and 'their people' once had blacks as slaves
there is not one person i know who has the rebel flag for any other reason. so no, its not a misconception for where im from

It really isn't a misconception Natasha. People usually associate a symbol for the last reason(s) it was used. ie: what comes to mind when I show you the word " Swastika " ? Even though it was used by a civilization that roamed the earth back in the Bronze Age.... which btw is even before my time, it doesn't paint a very pleasant picture.

It's original intent was a battle flag but it morphed into something else for many people. Depending what ones opinion of it is dictates what side of the fence they're on.

If you look at the flag of the Confederate States of America, it had the "rebel flag" in the corner, with a white background and a red vertical stripe. The two aren't all that different.

I don't have a flag hanging on my house but I've got a couple on neighbours, who have. Well, I tell you, they're overpatriotic
I have an American flag that I fly on these days:
Memorial Day (half-staff until noon) - Last Monday in May
Flag Day - June 14
Independence Day - July 4
Labor Day -- First Monday in September
Patriot Day (half-staff) September 11
Constitution Day - September 17
Veterans Day - November 11
There are other days too that I will fly the American flag. When I'm feeling really proud to be an American days.
I also have this tiny American flag on my computer desk at home that I put in a display with tiny pots of flowers and birds. I see it every single day.

You have a valid point...and I guess if I was affected by that generalization I'd probably feel the same way as I did about her statement about the rebel flag. Closemindedness just pisses me off. I'm sure the people I know that do have Rebel flags really don't care if some random Offtopicz member dislikes them simply b/c they own a flag, anyway...LOL
I don't think it's a matter of being closed minded. I think it's a matter of not being educated towards what the true meaning of the flags initial intent was. Speaking for myself I do think of all the bad shit that's associated with it. I didn't grow up with the flag, I wasn't taught it's history and I live in Canada where it has never had a place. Make sense?
In the 70s, West Ham supporters used to fly the rebel flag around, it had fuck all to do with slavery and everything to do with hating the law and not giving a fuck.
People who are over patriotic are funny and not in the laughable sense. Like the people that have those tiny american flags hanging off the antennae of their car... I don't find it "funny"...if somebody has given their life (I don't mean by dying, I mean by being in the service for their entire life) to fight for my country's freedom I say let them fly as many flags as they want. And if a mother has to sit at home and worry day in and day out if she's going to get a visit from someone telling her that her son or daughter is dead or missing, I say let her do whatever it takes to make her feel better. Just my 2 cents.
