Do older people

You also get older people who are genuinely clever, have learned from their experiences and know how to give advice without making you feel stupid. My second in command for a long time was a guy who had 20 odd years on me, and he was one of the best people I met. And of course there will always be kids who act like immature idiots. You can't group everyone together and generalise, it's demeaning.


What I find very annoying is when someone older than the average brings age up in every single disagreement. You know, the ones who keep mentioning 'you young pups' and other similar phrases, when the argument has nothing to do with age. As if being older magically makes their opinion more worthwhile. There are absolutely things that I know more about than some people who've got 50+ years on me, so don't act superior just because you've managed the amazing feat of being born before me.

I am older than a lot of people on here and I know a lot about a little and a little about a lot. I usually learn something new every day often from someone younger than me.
I try to be humble with my vast amount of knowledge and experience but sometimes the know it all in me spills out.:D

you've pretty much described my feelings except to say that i know too much about too many things and it gets me in trouble whether or not i'm trying to be humble.

also, in all the reading i've done in getting from diapers to pushing sixty (not that hard though, i'm only 56), i've built an unusually extensive vocabularly and get attacked much more than i get complimented on it or somebody asks me to clarify what i said.

it's usually young know-it-alls that go off on me. less literate people are intimidated by it and i make a special effort with people like that not to talk down to them and use simpler vocabulary when communicating with them.

in that thread that appears to me to be some of your inspiration for this post, i started by playing the fool in fun with alexis, which i've been doing for quite some time before enrolling here. when i was jumped for giving bad advice which was never intended to be advice in the first place, i got even more foolish with the troll, pissing him off enough that he got himself infracted.

as the clowns might say, this ain't my first rodeo.

Ask yourself if you really want to integrate with this community or just piss it off.
One way you stay and have interesting conversations and possibly enlighten yourself, The other way leads onward to another forum. Accept the fact that everybody is different and can have differing opinions than yours without taking it personally.

No, you dont know more than everybody else so get over it.

in one of the rep comments i just left, i told the person that the more i knew, the more i knew how little i actually knew compared to the sum of what there is to know.

since hk's 'young pups' remark was obviously aimed at me, i responded by thanking him for pointing out the error. i work with a lot of very young people and my use of the term isn't always disparaging. they are young pups and there are things that they do where the dog analogy works well since puppies often do stupid things that cause injury and property damage.

believe me, the kids i work with teach me just as much or more than i teach them. in the hippie world, i've seen young teens cork off on elders and win the argument because they were wiser than the elder.

here, especially with the arrogance displayed by some of the under 30 crowd , i'll clearly need more intellectual phrasing in the future to point out a perceived ignorance coming from or immaturity and lack of experience.

and this confrontational drivel? what kind of itis is that? the clown act may not work for you but my pocket's got a whole lot more money in it when i do it for real people, and not some cartoon characters hiding behind a computer screen.

i have been interacting with alexis since last summer on another forum. i kid with her a lot. i was kidding when a know-it-all jumped my shit. instead of backing down he insisted on escalating, starting a thread and trolling elsewhere.

in the real world, one of my jobs is to unmask people like that when they try to infiltrate our family. when that went down, i was dealing with two problems in my spiritual family involving seriously mentally ill predators as well as a troll war at the other forum that for a change wasn't using me as the eye of the storm the way all of you, including your sage old tuchas are trying to do here.

you want me to leave too? who has the balls to put up a poll and demand a vote? i lose, i leave forever. you lose, you go.

i'll only be here for a little while long today if any of the rest of you want to try and poke me with your stick and then i'll be gone until at least tomorrow.

With age comes wisdom... but sometimes age comes alone.

There is a big difference between being a know-it-all and actually knowing a lot about something.
Having read through the previous posts in this thread, I believe there are examples of both. ;)

No I dont really want you to leave, just looking for a more peaceful, less ego filled way of interacting. My "Family" is here on this forum and I try to look out for them in my own small way. No offense is intended, so if your feelings are hurt, I do so most humbly apologize.
