What type of jobs would you prefer?

I can understand that being the case, but there are laws protecting them from being sacked these days. Personally think there is too much protection. And I am not talking about unions, specially French unions

I was a manager in charge of many people for years and years and as such hired, laid off and fired more than I could remember . Rest assured there are ways of getting rid of the deadwood.

I wish I could know that secret of yours :D

There isn't any secret. Everybody fucks up and as long as you document it you're ass is covered. In other words you can always find a reason to lay someone off. This of course is in a non-union environment and a situation requiring a person being fired is an entirely different matter. For that you need just cause and there's a ton of things that could fall under that category.

Employment. I don't think I'd be good at firing people, or working all the time if I didn't have people.
Firing people is easy because you always have a valid reason.. ie: theft, dishonesty etc. I've never had a problem doing that but I absolutely hated laying people off due to a shortage of work. That caused me many sleepless nights.

I had to fire one person

It was in no way easy. One of the toughest things I have ever done.

But I have a small company so we tend to be closer with employees than with those at bigger places.

Did you fire him or lay him off? If you fired him you must of had a damn good reason so why would you have found it hard to do?

Size of the business doesn't have anything to do with it AA as far as I'm concerned. I've managed groups of 5 and I've managed groups of 50.

My dad's been managing hotels my entire life. Firing always looked hard to me =/ I've seen some cry, throw tantrums, one even threatened my dad's life. The boss' make the firing calls though, and I doubt they're always just. That probably has a lot to do with it.

He was fired

Layoffs used to bother me but not anymore

My men understand the drill

Anyway this was a young guy who had just got married. He was a good worker but was always a few minutes late. We gave him a bunch of warnings as my old man was a stickler about this and the other employees which were long time hires no doubt were grumbling

He earned it but it still was difficult. My brother and I both called him into the office to tell him. It was the first firing I think in the last 30+ years

Well you are human and had some sympathy for him because of his situation but as you said you did warn him numerous times so it shouldn't have come as a surprise. With any luck it taught him a lesson. I wouldn't have lost any sleep over that one.

I'd prefer my own business...but I would want it to be successful enough so I could pay other people to run it for me...whilst I reap the rewards.

At present I am employed, but combine it with "word of mouth" consultations....and earn extra pocket money that way.
