I just took an online IQ test out of boredom. The end result said I had a slight mental retardation!

I am currently studying Business Engineering in French (a language I learnt 1 year ago) and am succeeding at it and I have always done very well at school so I'm not too worried about the result! But HMPH what a shitty thing to read.

Anybody else performed so shockingly on an IQ test? Or am I the only dummy in the room?

you know in psychological terms the only thing an IQ test tests is the person's ability to do IQ tests.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Check out a study called 'A Nation of Morons' which showed how ineffective they are at figuring out how smart someone is.

My understanding is that IQ isn't a measure of intelligence as much as it is a measure of a person's capacity to learn. My IQ is around 150, or it was when I was tested in Jr. High. But while I'm intellectual, I'm nowhere near a genius, and there are plenty of people out there that are smarter than me that have lower IQ scores.

150? that's 5 points away from being a genius! I think 155 is the MENSA cut off point. I think my highest score was about 140, averaging around 130 or so.

The thing is, there are 9 known types of intelligence. IQ barely even scratches the surface of 1 type.

Spatial
Linguistic
Logical-mathematical
Bodily-kinesthetic
Musical
Interpersonal
Intrapersonal
Naturalistic
Existential

It's also worth pointing out that IQ is dependent on the results of your peers too, with 100 being the average.

It does give some indication, Stephen Hawking is said to have an IQ of around 200... and he's certainly one clever chappy...
 
I did a ton of IQ tests when I was in my late teens, which might explain why I test between 150-160. I can see how you just learn what the right answers are for IQ tests, rather than actually being clever in yourself. Although I like to think I'm just super smart and the tests reflect that.... :P
 
It's really not something I'm worried about at all, I no i downt haf a slite muntal retwardition :p

The majority of the questions were actually visual. They would provide a picture, cut a section out and I would have to choose from a group of cut outs which was the correct one and I have no shame in admitting that I am terrible when it comes to visualizing things...I will never be an artist, architect or interior designer!

Let's just say that my dad's is in the 160 range... he's easily the smartest person I've met. Probably the reason he's a physician, and he could have gone into any field of medicine that he wanted, he was skilled enough to be a surgeon, but chose family practice in order to be a real doctor to his patients. Now he's running a residency program that the local hospital is starting up.

I've taken a few MENSA practice tests and passed with relatively easily... I just don't want to shell out the money to actually try to become a member. :24:

I almost became a member, until they started wanting money....talk about being clever...

There are a lot of IQ so there are different scoring scales too. For Mensa the minimum accepted score on the Stanford-Binet is 132, while for the Cattell it is 148. So usually they just look at the percentages.

I do ok on iq tests, but i am very bad at paterns and colours and the such, which seems unfair to me.

Took the standardized Mensa test. They do a testing once a year in my Uni city so I went (paid the fee :p) and took the test, a month or two later they mailed me my result, that I was in the 2% and telling me how much the membership fee was :24:
