Since it came at a time when so many are focused on the events of the Christmas and New Year's holidays, the passing of R&B and pop legend Teena Marie may have gone unnoticed by many. She died at home on December 26, 2010 at the age of 54. She was a protege of funk pioneer Rick James and was signed to the Motown label in 1976 at the age of 20. From her third album, 1980's Irons In the Fire, on Teena Marie wrote, produced, sang, and arranged nearly all of her own material. She reached her commercial peak with 1984's top 5 pop smash "Lovergirl." In 2004 Teena Marie made a triumphant return to the charts with the top 10 gold certified album La Dona released on the Cash Money label. It brought her a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Teena Marie's most recent album Congo Square was released last year on the revitalized Stax label and reached the top 20. She was performing live regularly up until the time of her death. "Lady Tee" will be missed.
