I love the Smiths. Everyone should listen to their music. They were really the forerunner to the later Madchester era. Had it not been for them and moreso Factory Records I doubt the Manchester music scene would have enjoyed the success it did. Never bettered or equaled in my opinion.

if i remember rightly, and this based on limited experience of mine having visited London in the early 80s - it was a sign of the times, the recession was an impact Maggie Thatcher did nothing to help cure feelings of ill will from the north to the south, the country seemed economcally split in two, north and south, many northern musicians wrote of their struggles, angst and general lack of optimism

he was one of the best at that
