Inmates Cashing In.

Prison is big business. That's why the US has the most prisoners in the world. Someone is making a lot of money from it.
Per capita yes the US does apparently but Russia is a close 2nd.

This is an interesting breakdown. I would think that the Countries like Cuba and the last countries that are showing 0 probably do a lot more stoning to death people than Countries like ours. btw Spain ranks #61. What do you do with your criminals?

And how is it a big business and who's MAKING money?

Well having been there twice, I can tell you that it is far worse than you seem to think and no, we had no cable tv, didn't even have a tv, window behind the bars or a toilet the first one I was in, not to mention a rat problem.
Where I work Peter. If they have the money on their books, they can have it. They have cable tv, XBOX 360'S, PS3's. Yeah these guys live in Prisneyland not prison.

I'm not sure how many we have, but they do exist.

Prisons shouldn't be privatized, neither should sectors like education, health care etc.
The reason that we do have these companies creating prisons. Is because the states can not afford to build more and more prisons to house all thier inmates. So companies like my own come in and build these 300 million dollar prisons to house them for the states.

Yea, but I'm sure that cost just gets passed right onto the taxpayers when the company sends the government the bill.

Exactly, so why privatize them if we're going to pay for them anyway?
Here is the thing. The contract I work gives us just a fraction of what a CO makes in thier own state. They make 32 an hour. We make 16.50. So they do it because in the long run it is cheaper to pay us, than it is to pay more CO's from thier own states. They also only pay my company 80 something a day per inmate. To house them. When in thier own state it cost over 100 per inmate per day. To house them.

Thats why companies like mine are in business.

Here's a thought. Why not give the option of young first time offenders a choice to go in the Military instead of jail? Hell that could be a thread in itself!
i don't know if it's still being done, but my cousin and several other people i know got to see southeast asia that way.

Anita and Dark you make prison seem glamorous here and I highly doubt that is the case, yes I have watched lockup and from what Ive seen it doesn't seem so great to me. They get outside time for what a few hours a day? I cant imagine the food is that great I imagine its alot like cafeteria food stretched to feed alot more people. I wouldn't want to worry about constantly getting beat up or if I walked on the wrong side of the hallway getting stabbed. Yeah they have TV but what else do they have to do all day? Its not like they can go anywhere like you or I can. or grab a can of soda out of the fridge if they are thirsty. They sleep on a hard bed not a nice comfy mattress like you and I do and cant see family or friends but once a week for a time limit. Yeah thats so great......

Privatizing our prisons is not good for our country. Since our country has turned to the for profit prison industry in the 80's incarceration has more than tripled while the crime rate has dropped. 400,000 inmates to over 1,200,000 inmates. The second you turn to for profit companies for services such as these, you end up with millions going to lobbyists trying to bring their industry more money. In the case of for profit prisons, it's all about how to grow your population and keep them longer. They fight for tougher punishments with longer sentences not for the good of the community, but for more profits.

A lot of people who are in prison here go to halfway houses or rehab after they get out. Things are a lot different here than they are there. You have to take into account that the US probably has the best jails/prisons around the world. Have you ever watched Locked up Abroad or Locked up? Compared to what I have seen on those reality shows the US is way too slack on what it's like to be incarcerated.

I'm sorry, but... what?

The United States does not have the best correctional system in the world. Far from it, correctional faculties in the United States are extremely overpopulated, with this strain causing prison services to become overstretched, adversely affecting service delivery in areas such as health care, safety and most importantly, rehabilitation.

Indeed, if prisons have any measure of effectiveness, its the recidivism rate, of which the United States has one of the highest in the world. In addition, if prisons in the US are so good, why is their incarceration rate the highest on the planet?

Russia, a close second? There seems to be a very large gap between the nations. The irony here is that one nation is a virtual dictatorship, and the other is a vibrant democracy... and yet the democracy has the larger incarceration rate.

Also, most other Western countries have a more enlightened view towards punishment. While the US has a very punitive criminal justice system, with lengthy prison terms for seemingly minor offenses. Other countries consider prison as a last resort, in Australia at least, judges are inclined to impose other, less serious forms of punishment, instead of sending an offender straight to prison.

Statistically speaking, it's a cheaper solution, and helps keeps the incarceration rate low.

Private corrections is a very big business in the United States. Private prison groups also lobby State and Federal governments to increase the penalties for crimes. This ensures that the prisons remain full, which enables these companies to keep making billions off the suffering and misery of the most neglected and disadvantaged people in society.

Seriously DA? Cuba? Stoning? My God, the mainstream media has really brainwashed you guys about that place, haven't they? The Axis of Evil! lol!! They repealed the use of capital punishment in 2003 and have only executed 3 people since then for VERY serious offenses... The US kills far more inmates than Cuba!!!! The reason Cuba etc are showing 0 on inmates is because they don't give out that information...

In Spain prison is a total last resort. It's a very family orientated country over here, so minor offenses tend to be dealt with by community service, fines and so fourth. Prisons in Spain are horrible places. My local one is notorious as being particularly bad.

We also have 3 levels of police here, and depending on who catches you will depend on the punishment. If you're caught by local or nation police, you'll most likely spend a couple of days in jail, receive a fine and get released unless it's a very serious crime. If you're unlucky enough to be caught by the infamous Guardía Civil, then chances are you'll get taken out to the woods and beaten senseless. Sometimes even beaten to death... it's been known to happen... People are petrified of the Guardía, which I guess keeps people in check...

Crime rates in Spain generally are pretty low. People in Spain are far happier than most countries I've been to. People aren't very greedy here, and as I said, they're very family orientated, which I'm sure reduces the crime levels too. Also they have a system here where people can warn the police of potential crimes, people misbehaving or breaking the law without the risk of prosecution, so the local police can get involved very early on, possibly keeping kids from continuing to offend.

Well they shouldn't have broke the law then huh? My point is that they do get things that they shouldn't have. And this I do know because, like previously stated, I know some who were in a pen. I don't care if they don't get all the privileges we have on the outside. They don't deserve them. If they did something to get put into a pen then you bet your butt they don't deserve the finer things until after they've served their time and hopefully learned their lesson.
Can't do the time don't do the crime...
Yes I'm cold hearted I know.

Never said prison was great but if criminals are going to complain about how bad our prisons are then they should take a look at how prisons are in different countries. I'm with Anita on this one. If you cant deal with the conditions of being in prison then don't do the crime and for the love of God don't repeat doing crimes. I really think that the correctional facilities are way too comfy. They get fed 3 meals a day, they have cable TV, they have mattresses to sleep on unless they are put into segregation and they have family visits. Now if they didn't have some of these things then maybe it would be more of a deterrent to commit more crimes. *shrugs*

Audra, they are living the prison lifestyle as a result of their own actions, they are murderers, thieves, rapists, drug dealers, they don't DESERVE TV, they don't DESERVE outside time, they don't DESERVE a comfortable bed to sleep in, they don't DESERVE the ability to get a soda out of the fridge, they have EARNED their way into prison, what's the saying? "They've made their bed and now they must lay in it", Tax Payer's money should NOT be used to entertain these pieces of shit, they can sit in a dark room with no bed or toilet 24/7 and eat one tiny meal a day for all I care.

That's the point she's making, they aren't living the great life.

Stuff like being able to watch TV and walking around outside for an hour don't make prison glamorous.

Also, you're arguing with the mindset that criminals have committed a crime, so we should throw the book at them and make their lives miserable. I think it would be admirable if society manages to punish and retain criminals yet at the same time do it in a civilized and fair manner, rather than just treating them inhumanely.

Another thing. There's plenty of criminals walking around who have committed crimes that just haven't been caught. Only a small fraction of crimes are reported, investigated, go through the courts, and result in a conviction and prison time. So in essence, there are a lot of people walking around scott free while those who do get caught, in your opinion, should be punished severely. There's a divide there.
