Surgery, Anyone?

First off, I do understand how you feel. I've had laparoscopic surgery myself b4 and have actually worked in the Operating Room although my specialty is Heart and lung Surgery and transplants. It didn't matter be it I was in the medical field as I was as nervous and terrified as you. That's very normal of course ;)

What helped me decrease my nervousness on the way to the hospital was chewing gum. There's a certain enzyme released during process of chewing that helps decrease nervousness. Others who have posted already are correct to say that at Pre- Op ( pre- operation department) you will be given medications to help you with nervousness, anxiety and including anti- emetic pill which helps with nausea/ vomiting :)

When in the OR and if you're like me who is easily affected by meds- you'll be so relaxed that you won't even remember anything until you wake up post surgery. The only thing though that affected me much was just being very drowsy post surgery but you will do fine. Drink lots of fluids to flush those anesthesia out of your system.

Since it's laparoscopic it's a very simple procedure given the advanced technologies they use now to do it as quickly and efficiently as possible. Surgeon, Anesthesiologist and other medical staff are there to help u and meet with you before surgery so make use of them to make your needs known :)

Hope that helps . God speed :)

I had my gall bladder removed in 2003. Because it was my first surgery they gave me a couple valium before to keep me calm. Worked like a charm. Just let them know you're nervous and they'll hook you right up. ;)

:homo:ette, they are most likely going to drug you up so you wont be to scared when they knock you out!!!
I have had a few surgery's most of the time I have been pumped full of morphine so by the time I go into the room I could barely spell my name let alone have worries!! LOL.. You will be fine hun!! Positive thoughts ok!!

double inguinal hernia repair 1957

tonsillectomy 1958

abdominal GSW repair 1987

facial reconstruction 1999

a few minor orthopedic procedures sprinkled in here and there to repair broken bones and damaged cartilage.

not too bad -- the bullet was only .22 cal, only bounced once and missed my vitals (by mm's)
none of the skull fractures were life threatening, but there were a lot of them. bounced my face off about 50 feet of cliff when it crumbled. i was trying to rescue a puppy. stinking mutt got down on his own while we were waiting for the chopper to come get me.

but boy is that morphine fun! they couldn't get me off it quick enough. expensive stuff to give to an indigent patient.

So, tomorrow, on December 3rd, I'll be offering up my gall bladder. :ninja The damn thing has been pissed off for almost 2 months, so, bye-bye to it.

How many of you have had surgery and what does your head do to you while you're waiting for the inevitable comatose state induced by the anesthesiologist? Personally, I'm poopin' purple twinkies over being knocked out. :willy_nilly:

my best mate had it done last month with keyhole surgery.

In and out the same day, and she felt fantastic afterwards.

I freak out going under too...I try to meditate.

Good luck on your surgery!

I don't get too riled up about surgery. The only thing I care about is making sure they give me the anti nausea stuff so I don't puke from the anesthesia.

I've had surgery three times this year and the after pain for the first was a bigger scare for me and the prepping for the 2nd was the worst part to me the third was wisdom teeth so I wasn't too worried til after and worrying if i would get dry socket.

I've had groin surgery and I had my tonsils removed, personally the getting knocked out part didn't bother me, it was actually a pretty pleasant experience, the gas smelled like bubblegum.

I remember when I had my tonsils and adenoids removed as a child I got rootbeer anesthesia. It was awesome! However, today I'm glad they just shoot it through the IV.

Yeah, when I had surgery to fix testicular torsion I got it through the IV, not as pleasant as the gas mask but still not bad lol.
owie! just the name sounds painful.

whatever did you do to over torque your testes so badly it required surgery to repair?

i want to make sure i never do anything like that. the name alone gives me images of a purple gorilla grabbing me by the nutsack, twisting it hard and starting to jump up and down.

lol it just happened, I woke up one day and my left testicle was swelled up to about the size of a baseball, went to the hospital, the doctor tried to untwist it by hand which failed miserably and was easily the most painful experience of my life, I was then taken by ambulance to a better hospital where surgery was done to fix the problem and stop it from ever happening again.

I've only had two surgeries.

4 wisdom teeth removed that were impacted, and they knocked me out. I wasn't nervous at all, waking up was really weird... I forgot were I was and sacked a nurse. :24:

And my c-section, I watched the whole thing and was in awe :D Wasn't nervous at all about it

You'll be fine, lots of people have that procedure done, my co-worker had her's removed last month an she's doing great

I've never been anesthetized and I would be fearful. I would definitely want them to tape my mouth shut because my greatest fear is to talk while under. I have many secrets. :ninja

I'm sure you'll be fine Goldy. I'll be sending some positive vibes your way and some prayers upwards for you too. :)

I'm hoping now that I would have thought of that idea before i went for surgery :24:

According to my Surgeon, i did talk during surgery and my MD was just smiling and wont tell me what i've divulged maybe about myself :24::willy_nilly::24: :ninja

I've been knocked out wice for surgery. Both times, I was sure that I wouldn't wake up.... but low and behold here I am!! The anesthesia made me violently ill both times though, so although I was alive I felt like road kill!

Sorry I didn't see thos post surgery GD Woman. I've been sliced and diced more times that I care to remember so I could have been a wealth of info. The removal of my gall damitbladder was the easiest one though. Just a few small holes and it was a goner.

I hope you get up and running quick like a bunny.

Damn... I misread the OP. Your surgery is in a few hours. Getting knocked out ain't no big deal. It's the waking up part that kinda sucks sometimes. Just think of it as a good " trip " and enjoy the ride. That's what I do / did / done.

With any luck you'll have the quick type and just have a few more small holes in ya than when you went in with instead of that big ol nasty incision that makes you always wanna leave the lights off if you know what I mean.
