Well it looks like we're gunna get a couple of new brooms to keep the joint clean and tidy and I'm curious to know if it's got you shakin' in your boots. Kinda like when a new boss is about to arrive and take over..... one never knows if it's their arse that's gunna get the first beating.

In the working world Dana a broom is referred to as someone being in a position of authority. So.. when a new manager is hired people would often say " there's the new broom". Now a broom is used for sweeping so if you translate " there's the new broom" into everyday English it means... that's the new guy they hired to clean house and get rid of all the useless employees.
 
i agree with Dana! a broom here is what you sweep the floor with (or ride around on! LOL) and i just called my mom to ask her (since you said it was a generational thing), she's 50 and she's never heard of that expression either!
