Is it two parents and one or more children? A single parent and their child? A childless married couple? An unmarried couple living together without kids? With kids?

I thought about throwing pets into the list of possibilities, but wasn't really sure about that. I know a lot of people consider them family, and we did growing up. Not having a dog now though, I can't see how people let them sleep in their bed and kiss their faces. That's a completely different thread though.

Well, what about my step grandmother in law (?) who won't get married to her bf because financially it makes more sense to NOT, but they've been together for 10+ years?

I don't know... I just don't think of Matt and I as "family." I still think of my family unit as my parents and brother.

Oh shit girlie.. that's a new kettle of fish.. I haven't a clue....

But you both have made a home together I think that's part of it too.. And I guess it all comes down to the actual couple... :surrender

I've always thought of it as two parents and kid(s) for some reason. But I suppose it could be parent and kid(s) if they have a stable family home.

I think of Zorak, Imogen and me as a family even though we don't even live together. I view it more as Imogen's family and like my family would be my dad, mum, brother + sister.

Two or more people who live in a sibling-like relationship or parent/guardian-like relationship. Single-parent, same-sex, nuclear families, extended families, adoptive families, close friends, etc.

My last family unit was my husband and me and our Border Collie. We couldn't have kids so our dog was our child. We were a family I'd have to say.

Me and my hubby, Evan when he's with us, our 3.5 cats and 2 dogs! We are more a menagerie than a family ;)

I'll be damned if someone says a single parent doesn't constitute a family! It doesn't take two adults and a child to make a family. It can be one adult and a pet, an adult and a child or even 15 children, a couple married or not, etc. There are so many different types of families, but they are all families none the less.

I love my family!

:thumbupI consider a lot of my friends as family. Sure, we might fight from time to time but we'd defend each other to the hilt. "He's a cunt but our cunt" is how we feel about each other. Just like a family should be.:thumbup

Myself, my hubs, his family and our friends make up the people that I call family.

Personally, family doesn't necessarily mean "blood related" or "by marriage", it's the people that I've come to know and love over the years that have had an impact on my life.

I do include pets as well, though. I'd always grown up with a cat or dog and they were family to me as well.
