The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Any big fans here? I'm at about 180 pages into it. It's a murder mystery and it's keeping my interest, but so far I'd call it a little dry. Does this book explode with excitement at some point?

What is most interesting about this book is that the character Lisbeth Salander is 25 years old, but has to report to some Guardianship Agency in Sweden based on her troubled youth, and being in foster homes. She earns a living as a private investigator. I'm wondering at age 25 why would the government be keeping direct control over her? Anyone know if this Agency really exists in Sweden?

I watched the movie and they don't explain much AT ALL.

I'm sad I watched the movie before reading the book, but some one rented it for me so I watched it to be nice...

So you watched the Swedish movie with subtitles or was it dubbed into English? They are making a U.S. movie version of this book. Hopefully it will still be in Sweden.

I've most finished the book. What I would call the climax has just begun. The subject matter of this book makes it a thriller, but it does not read quite like a thriller, more like a documentary. It has a subdued feeling. I'm not sure what to blame this on, the original author or the translation. Once I finish I'll report back.

Some might consider the following a spoiler although I've kept it generalized enough, I don't believe it is:

Political reporter is tried for libel and looses. While recovering from this event, he agrees to be hired by the former head of a large corporation to investigate the disappearance of his niece 40 years ago that has been unsolved despite a thorough investigation. Henrik Vanger seems to think someone in his family is responsible. I'll let you read it in the book, but for this elderly CEO, something happens annually on his birthday that makes him believe his niece was murdered and he is being taunted by whomever is responsible. The reporter ends up assisted by a young female investigator with a troubled past to figure out what happened.

IMBD Link. The English version of this movie is being made with a projected release date of Dec 2011, a long way off and will star Daniel Craig (James Bond) as the reporter and Rooney Mara as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (investigator).

I've read the first two books. I'm not really sure about them. I liked them but there's something about them that I feel like I'm missing. I blame it on the translation (there are several clunky parts in it). I also don't like the change in the title. I was expecting something different as far as characters and plots because of it. Never pictured Daniel Craig in the lead role. Not sure how I feel about that.

It just feels like the story should be more exciting than it reads. Besides the climax (which I just started), the high point of this book for me so far was

At this point (unless the end of this book stinks) I plan on getting the next one in the series.

It feels the same way with me too. I think you have to view it more as a trilogy and less like three books with the same characters. The second book definitely adds to the overall story and the excerpt from the third book at the end makes it pretty clear that it's a continuation of the second.

I'm about 1/3 into the last book of the trilogy, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. I now classify the trilogy as a worthy read starting out slow (in my opinion) and gaining momentum in both the 2nd and 3rd books. I'm really into the story now and don't want it to end, but alas.

My wife has recommended this trilogy to me a couple times. I was reluctant due to my impression they're for teenage girls. She responded, "see they're perfect for you!"

I can only resist so much pressure. So I'm going to have to give them a try now.

and I'd started the third ages ago, but put it down to start another book because I didnt want it to finish.

Its so sad we wont see any *ore books fro* Larsson, as he died after delivering the *anuscripts for these 3

I put it off because of the hype but now I really want to read them.

I'd buy them now, but I have told myself I'm not allowed to buy anymore books until the new year so I can get through the lot I've already bought. I have quite an addiction to buying books at the moment. I describe the first book as the thriller without the thrills. Reads like a technical manual to some degree. The first 100 pages are slow. However it was good enough to keep me going. I know I'm repeating myself, but I'm convinced that they hired better translators for the 2nd and 3rd books.

Just watched The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo (Swedish, subtitled). It was worth watching. Maybe not up to Hollywood thriller standards but good, better than the book.
