If so, critiques? I was eventually gonna have to get her an iPad, but then her best friend got her a Nook, the Barnes and Noble reader for her BDay. Off the hook! ;) I'm been messing with getting it registered, but have not seen a text page yet. It's overall size is about 7x5" and only .5 " thick. I know one thing, the keyboard area is a tiny screen, as in 3"x 1-1/8". It's a pain to type on and expect to hit the right buttons. Anyone love it?

I looked at it for a while, but was pretty unimpressed. A guy brought it into work to see what some of our reports looked like on it, and it wasn't that great for that purpose. I prefer my Kindle to be honest. I'm sure the Nook is good for some people, but I think the Kindle is a better overall product.

Yep, just don't call me a blabber mouth. ;)

I think the Kindle is bigger, which in this case, a little bigger is better. :) I went shopping with it and was surprised that the ability to search books by author was not offered, in other words to see a list of available authors and to search them alphabetically. Can you do that on the Kindle? Maybe the Nook has the ability and I just have not figured it out. Or maybe if I pull up a particular book, I could then see all of the other titles by that author? I'll check. It does have a general search function but you have to type in something.

The Kindle has both a search and a browse functionality. You can search for what ever you want, and browse by genre and I think author. I'll have to look at it again when I get home tonight.

I was using a friend's last night. I liked it, but I've never used the Kindle, so I can't compare. :( Sorry.

The screen was a little small and kind of frustrating though. But that could have been because I was learning, too.

forgot about this thread, but yes you can browse by author on the Kindle

Maybe there is a way on the Nook. If I was going to buy a reader at this point, I think it would be an iPad. I want color although I'm sure the larger screen has a detrimental effect on battery life. I think the iPad is good for 9 hrs or so. The Kindle maybe good for a week?

Does anyone know if you can move a purchased book between two nooks, two kindles, or two ipads? I don't plan on purchasing my own copy of a book my wife has. We don't do that with regular books, see no reason why we should do it electronically. Thanks!

Good question and point Minor..

I just Google E-Book licenses and from the hits I got it said you are only permitted one license her book.. Perhaps It can be transfered but no where does it state that it can be legally done.. Not sure any company wants you to do it either.. More $$$ that way..

The Kindle EULA is a good example. Section 3, which deals with "Digital Content" (such as downloaded books), says that "Unless specifically indicated otherwise, you may not sell, rent, lease, distribute, broadcast, sublicense or otherwise assign any rights to the Digital Content or any portion of it to any third party, and you may not remove any proprietary notices or labels on the Digital Content." In other words, you are forbidden to lend or sell the book you've just "bought". In real-world terms, you can't lend your copy of 1984 to a friend or donate it to the school jumble sale.

Under the subsection on "Use of Digital Content', the Kindle EULA says: "Amazon grants you the non-exclusive right to keep a permanent copy of the applicable Digital Content and to view, use, and display such Digital Content an unlimited number of times, solely on the Device or as authorized by Amazon as part of the Service and solely for your personal, non-commercial use."

Translation: you can't back up your electronic books on to any other device - which means that if your Kindle packs up, or if Amazon moves on to another technical standard, you're screwed: your entire digital library has effectively been vaporised. Then you look round your house and note the number of electronic devices that no longer work.

I think I will stick to my hard copies for a while.. :)

Thanks for the info, but it turns out there is a way. :)

I'm not sure about the others, but with the iPad you can simply share the account. I was told the iTunes account allows up to 5 shared device so if you are going to share with your girl friend or wife by giving her your account sign in. I can see that this would not work for all situations.

Then good for Apple on loosing its rules.. But out of curiosity keep me posted as to whether the information does work. Apple certainly does not seem to state that on its site..
