I bought a bass guitar off Craigslist

It was spotless and I saved a couple hundred bucks

I like the idea of dealing with somebody local so you can see what you are buying.

The nice thing about Cl is you can actually try the bugger out before the money changes hands. That's great on used stuff.

The bad thing about CL is all the fuck arounds you have to deal with.

And I didn't? She asked my opinion and I gave it.

Criticising a review based on *one* factor alone and highlighting that factor as you did before Zirc had a chance to read the balance of review was poor form. It would have been good form to allow her to make her own mind up rather than prejudicing her mind against a lens due to one factor.

Just because performance "drops off" means the "drop off" is unacceptable. It may be acceptable enough to Zirc, even if it 'drops off'. My big beercan lens (75-300mm) is very well regarded for the most part but it has it's own issues like purple fringe etc and a drop off. However, these are acceptable to me even if it wouldn't be to you.

I said most of that in post #3. ;) I will repeat this though... I just think a person buys a zoom to be able to use the longer end and if continuously produces images at the bottom end of the scale why buy it. That's one reason I buy from a local dealer and not off the net. Where I buy they have a very good return policy so if the lens is not what I expected then I could return it. That was a big deciding factor when I made my Sigma 150 - 500mm purchase a few weeks ago. Never having purchased a Sigma before I wanted to ensure my ass was covered.

I agree to some extent and I got it the first time you said it. I would recommend Zirc to do the same - if she is buying a lens (budget or not) to buy from a retailer or place that has a good return policy. Therefore she can return any lens she finds unacceptable.

It's within my budget. :D It's actually a few hundred cheaper than my Canon equivalent that I just sold. Maybe I should be shooting Nikon.

If I ever switch bodies, which is unlikely really - but if I did I would switch to Nikon. It strikes me that Canon has more than it's fair share of pixel peeping lens snobs :)

Siph what you seem to be missing is that Zirc asked my opinion and the answer I gave was exactly that... my opinion. She's a big girl and can make up her own mind once she reads the reviews. If they were something I didn't want her to read and expected she just take my word for it I wouldn't have posted the link. Because I gave her my opinion it doesn't mean you can't add yours. It's good that you did actually. The more opinions the better but what I find confusing is why you are going on about our differences. You have your standards as far as what's acceptable and I have mine and it's doubtful we'll change our mind based on what the other says so why confuse the poor girl.

Psst.... When you said " My big beercan lens (75-300mm) " I almost spit my coffee out. That's the cheap lens I was talking about being my first purchase. :D So you see now that our expectations are miles apart.

She wasn't looking at it as if she was buying from a retailer. She was looking at an E-Bay ad and that being the case I doubt she would be able to return the goods.

Yeah, I remember everyone was very helpful about my laptop questions. :D I finally ordered one and it's coming next week. Can't come soon enough because I'm about to throw this one out the window. :willy_nilly:

I'm not trying to convince you on what's acceptable. You and I both have our differences there and never the twain shall meet. :)

All I was trying to do was present a different view. You had already posted your links, I posted mine and you say now that was good because she has more choice but all I saw was you highlighting the big negative from the end of my review link rather than letting Zirc make up her own mind as you now suggest. If you really wanted her to make up her own mind, then why comment twice on the same thing (repeating your rationale of reasoning for a telephoto)? Should have just left it after explaining your rationale the first time when you quoted that bit of the review I linked.

Psst.... When you said " My big beercan lens (75-300mm) " I almost spit my coffee out. That's the cheap lens I was talking about being my first purchase. :D So you see now that our expectations are miles apart.

Indeed they are. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to to splash cash on better lenses but I'll make do with what I've got and I think I take some reasonable snaps with what I have. Well - more so when the lens cleaning kits arrive.

She wasn't looking at it as if she was buying from a retailer. She was looking at an E-Bay ad and that being the case I doubt she would be able to return the goods.

My comment there was in agreement with yours - to recommend Zirc to buy from an online or other retailer as you mentioned you did where she is more able to return the goods. No one wants to end up with a lens they're unhappy with and not being able to afford another.

I have no idea what you mean by that.

It was a subtle suggestion that Canon people are elitist snobs - sometimes. You can't help it, I guess it must be in the genes. I won't buy one because when I did shoot with a Nikon for a while (my friend's D80) I loved it and that's why I said if ever I changed bodies, it would be to Nikon. That, and for fear of contracting the elitist thing if ever I did go Canon.

I'm a big fan of zoom lenses. It means I don't have to be as close to my subject when taking survielence photos. :ninja I'm also a big fan of top of the line things so perhaps I will save my pennies for something bigger and better. :D

But while we're on the subject of eBay and zoom lenses, check this out...

http://cgi.ebay.com/2000mm-Telescop...ViewItem&pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item335e1b3559

:willy_nilly:

On this type of lens, I have no experience at all so I'll refrain from too much comment other than the sensible things like for something that big, a darn good tripod would be needed.

The constant F13 aperture could give some cause for concern but if on a good tripod and the subject exposed long enough perhaps that could be mitigated.

Guy - I think I remember you saying you had experience of a super zoom lens when some guy let you play with his or am I thinking of the wrong thing?

I was given the opportunity to use a fellows Canon EF 500/4 L IS USM for a few minutes. It might have been the 600mm. I really can't remember. Silly me. In any event I managed to whack off about 6 shots or so. I didn't try it handheld but I would have liked to. I also has my 1.4TC bolted to it cuz I was so excited I forgot to remove it when I took my 70 - 200mm off. :24: It was an honor I tell ya but definitely not enough to give me any real experience except to say that I would love one. That one is out of my budget though. It's $9600.00 Cdn.

Ok Siph I'm gunna splain myself a bit better as to what I feel went on.

It's my opinion that Zirc initially axed me for my opinion and that I'm sure we can agree on. Is it safe to assume she didn't axe you to give my opinion? I believe it's safe to assume that as well. Considering that, if you read what you posted very carefully you might see exactly what I'm saying. You tried to state my opinion. That's where the misunderstanding took place. That said, it didn't eliminate you from stating your opinion which you did. What I didn't need was to be chastised for stating my opinion nor should I have been chastized for pointing out the negative. Maybe I'm the wrong person to axe an opinion of about camera gear because my sights are slightly higher than most. That's just an opinion though and like assholes we all have one. :D

Furthermore, Zirc didn't ask me to sugar coat my opinion by providing links of any kind, be they positive or negative. I did that out of the kindness of my heart cuz... well.... I'm a damn nice guy. :D Besides that I wanted to ensure I provided something to back up my claim which btw hasn't and won't change despite any positive comments posted by you or anyone else. Maybe it's wrong but what's real important right now is it's my opinion. Not yours, not Joe Blows... mine.. all mine and because I'm such a kindhearted guy I really don't wanna see her blow her money on something she MAY not be happy with. She's gotta shovel a lot of horseshit to earn her living and I have shoveled enough shit in my farm days to know it isn't the sweetest job around.

DISCLAIMER #1
I would like to advise any future camera gear purchasing buffs not to axe MY opinion unless that's what you want.... MY opinion. I might not be the most experienced shutterbug around but so far I still have my own opinions and be damned if I'm gunna give 'em up.

DISCLAIMER #2
My opinions be they in this instant or be they in the future are subject to change without notice.
