Strange festivals

I have found since moving to the boonies that these country people really like their festivals. Each little town has something that they are known for and they create a whole festival around it.

Around here we have:
-Goats, Music, and More festival (my personal favorite)
-Mule day
-Buttercup festival
-Moon Pie festival (which is THIS weekend! whoopee!

They are so strange...yet so much fun to go to! I love them!

What about everyone else? Do you all have little festivals in your area celebrating some random animal or object?

We used to live in Dothan, Alabama which has a "Peanut Festrival". A little town just South had an "Opossum Festival". West was Opp, Alabama which has a "Rattlesnake Rodeo" every spring. "Gulf Shores has a "Shrimp Festival". Florala has an annual "Mullet Toss" at The FloraBama.

An opossum festival? What is there to celebrate about opossums? :yuk

And what exactly is a Mullet Toss?

Us Cajuns like our festivals too.

Rice Festival
Crawfish Festival
Sugar Cane Festival
Frog Festival
Herb Festival
Daylilly Festival
Catfish Festival

Most of them are the same trashy little fair with just good food and a dinky parade, but some are gems.

At the Catfish festival, all the contestants for the Ms. Catfish Queen contest have to participate in a fried catfish eating contest with crowns and sashes on with their hands tied behind their back.... :D

:24: That is awesome!

The goat festival around here is always held close to Halloween so they have a couples costume contest for owner and goat. Best part is if you don't have your own goat, you can rent one to dress up! Hahaha.

Ooooh...I also love the fainting goat contest...

Considering you are from TN. is there a part of the Goat Festival where your men have to wear rubber boots? :D If so I'm not coming. :24:

Pittsburgh has a festival (generally centered around the food and music) for every ethnicity just about every weekend during the summer months. The Polish, Greek, and of course, Italian ones being my favorite! But we also have some cool ones like:

The Pittsburgh Arts Festival which this year featured a giant floating head of Andrew Carnegie in the Allegheny River:

The Vintage Grand Prix where they race vintage cars in Schenley Park...here's a piccie:

The Dragon Boat Festival which is boatloads *groan* of fun! Actually, was in one of the races a few years ago:
