Our current digital cam, the lens is badly scratched and damaged from being dropped and kids getting a hold of it.

Anyway, was wondering suggestions of what sort to get. Going to be using it for general use of snapping pictures of the kids, outings, trips, and I sorta want to try tinkering with photography... lot of our talented Otz photographers are giving me an itch to see if I can be 1/4 as good as you.

Yikes... I hate these questions because they are hard to answer. So many options... so many questions.

First of all what's your budget? Secondly, are you going to let your kids near it again? ( all kidding aside )

Can you afford a DSLR? Those things are pretty nifty.
I wouldn't suggest one at this point because.... the first one was dropped and / or the kids used it as a football. Cameras are quite delicate when it comes to being dropped. ;) There are some nice P & S cameras around that allow a person to have quite a bit of control but one needs to know the budget.

:24:No, kids aren't going to be touching it, no more lending to family/friends... strictly Bryan and I and a high shelf when not in use.

We were thinking of spending between 90-190 US dollars?

$450+ is the prices I got... might be a little high for Bryan's tastes.

We currently have a Olympus Camedia DC C-3020 Zoom (3.2 Mega Pix) and a GE DC 8.0 Megapix (scratched lens, shutter doesn't always close or open right)

Ok that narrows it down. I'm a Canon fan for a lot of reasons that I won't get in to because in the end it won't matter. Gimme some time to come up with a suggestion or two.

This is from best Buy's U.S.A. site. Keep in mind you will need to buy a memory card. That applies to any camera you buy.

One of the reasons I like this is because it comes with a rechargeable lithium battery so you don't have to spend anything to keep the juice flowing. I know it's above your budget but in the long run you'll save tons of cash for that reason alone. Another reason I like it is because it's 12.1 megapixal which means your pics should be damn clear with minimal noise when used under decent lighting conditions. It also has Image Stabilization which imo is a must. If it's more than you want to spend lemme know and I'll find something cheaper.

Here is a review from one of my most trusted sites.

This is the full version of Steve's conclusion. It's a worthwhile read.

I like Canon as well. I am playing right now with Fujifilm finepixJ20. It is a 10.0 megapixel. They were clearing them out for the 12.1 at Bestbuy. I got a deal on it. It takes pretty good pictures for me and it fits in my pocket.

That's not totally out of budget, I'll show it to Bryan tonight when he gets home. Head to micro center and Best buy see it in person. Thanks Guy :D

I got my sister one of these for her birthday based on a recommendation from a friend, who has one as well. They both really like it. It's a nice point-and-shoot and it's under $200.

Cool, we'll look at that too :D They look pretty similar.

i would go DSLR, but maybe used???

you can get an older model with less fanciness since you are just starting out.

other than that I always like Kodak for point and shoot...

I would always recommend buying a Canon over most brands: Canon have been making digital optics for much longer than most other companies and whilst they tend to lack the bells and whistles of the other brands, they certainly make up for it in picture quality. My ex gf and I went to buy a cheap camera a few years back and the lady in the shop convinced her to buy an Olympus, same price as a Canon but with extras like bluetooth and stuff. It was a huge mistake: the pictures were flat and dreadful. The Canon in the same price range pissed all over it.

I've got a Canon EOS. Love it :)

Much to much for what they are looking to do. How do I know? Well the budget tells me everything. ;)

Um... Like a Brownie. I remember those. Great for their day. :clap If they bought something older I can guarantee you they would not be impressed with the .. oh nevermind. On second thought... they wouldn't be impressed with pretty much all of it.

I don't want to piss in your grits but Kodak are the worstest camera that someone can throw their money at. If I won one in a contest I wouldn't bother to give it away. I would just toss it in the garbage.

Thanks again for all the advice, and not ripping each other's head off too much ;)

Now all I need is a teacher (and to get the camera)!
