Thanks Janie. I think I was not always as careful with lens changing as I should have been so I feel that I'm definitely to blame at some point for some of the marks at least - definitely one of those bumbling idiots :p
It doesn't matter how careful you are while changing a lens. Those specks of dust are so small you can't see them with the naked eye and regardless of how hard you try they will magically appear as real big spots on your shots. It is wise of course not to change a lens during a dust or sand storm though.

i had some serious dust marks on my sensor and id been putting it off for a while. Its a bit of a problem when the dust spots are in hair.. its a nightmare to get out!!

i shot this last week.. then the second i got home i cleaned my sensor.. a key board hoover that i took the bag off and set to blow. let it run for a few seconds to clear dust out the hoover then blew the dust off the sensor.

It's that kind of spot in the hair thing that finally has got me on the warpath to doing something about it.

A shot of a scene including some telegraph poles with a slightly graded blue sky and a streak going through the wires is annoying.

I hope you got it all. There is more there but I didn't want to go any further.

Is it bad that I have been cleaning my stuff with a small kit I got at inkleys on sale one day--it was very inexpensive, but I've been using it for months and seems to work great...

I assume your are talking about cleaning your lens? Na... you're ok. Just be careful you don't scratch it. If I were you I would go back and buy a can of that compressed air to blow the crud off before you clean it. I wouldn't use it to clean a sensor though. :eek

Hot Tip: You can save money buy buying the cleaner and a nice cloth that a optical dispenser sells. It's the same liquid and the cloth is reusable.

I have never cleaned my sensors...do I need to? I keep a lens on it at all times and am super super careful when I change lenses.
If you can't see any real amount of dust in your shots it's best you don't fiddle with it.

About being " super super careful ". As I said before it doesn't matter how careful you are once you pop a lens off for some strange reason the inside of a camera acts like a dust magnet.

When and if I ever get a chance to go and shoot again I know I'll get some dust. I'll post those shots to show you what I mean and like you I try to be " super super careful " but sometimes that just isn't good enough.

I used to own a 100 - 400 mm Canon lens and they have a push - pull system to change focal length. That was a great lens but because of the way it worked it acted like a Hoover :D and sucked everything smaller than a boulder into it. For that reason I hated that lens so I sold it. Now I want it again because I used it so much and I miss it a lot. :D

I got a blue sky shot today. Will grey it up when home and post it so that you can see the horribleness that gets my goat.

It's cool :) That was very revealing and made me realise just how lucky most of my shots obviously covered the majority of the defects.

Just think how much better it would be if I never started this thread. :24: You would never have found out. I hope you don't hate me now. :D
